RIP

I think have probably watched every episode of The McLaughlin group for over 20 years now thanks to the magic of DVRs and VCRs. It was sad this week (first show he ever missed) hearing the recording of his voice and you knew this was coming. He will be missed.

John McLaughlin, what a character. Yeah, I never missed a show from like 85 thru the early 90s. He was so hilarious, his intonations, the nicknames he'd give people, his phrasing. Just an excellent broadcaster. Bye-BYE!

Wikipedia tells me that not only was McLaughlin a Jesuit who was ordained as a priest in the 50s, but he was still a Jesuit while working as a speechwriter for Nixon. I didn't know that was allowed.

He only left the Jesuits after Nixon's resignation when he wanted to stay in DC and they wanted him to go elsewhere.

Having lived in the DC metro area for 25 years from 1985-2010, I, too, was a regular McLaughlin Group watcher. IIRC, the panelists when I first began watching were Robert Novak, Jack Germond, Al Hunt, and Mark Shields, although I could be mistaken. I know that once Novak, Hunt and Shields left to form the basis of The Capital Gang several years later, I became a regular viewer of that show as well.

John McLaughlin was one of a kind and will be missed.

R.I.P.

I never really got McLaughlin. Too much like the Irish dinner tables of my youth: 8 kids, 2 parents, 4 grandparents and 5 bachelor uncles yelling at one time and screaming to be heard. Entertaining, I guess, but after the show was over I couldn't tell you what anybody had said.

That was fortunate because in all probability everyone was spewing nonsense anyway.

I saw the McLaughlin show a few times - I thought it a waste of my time and that everyone on the show should be publicly hanged. I still stand by that assessment.

I was never a big fan of The In Laws. I did like a few of his other comedies; however, most notably, Silver Streak and The Out of Towners, and to a lesser extent, Plaza Suite. He's probably best remembered for a movie I didn't care for at all: Love Story.

Silver Streak was a fun movie. Saw it when first hit the silver screen back in the dark ages.

And then there was See No Evil, Hear No Evil. Great stuff with Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. The movie featured some brilliant comedic scenes.

Also, it was one of Kevin Spacey's first movie appearances playing the inept bad guy.

zomg, that's Elliot Carlin of Bob Newhart Show fame! He was excellent. Horribly depressed misanthrope but still rich as hell and reminding everyone about it.

The Thanksgiving episode of Bob Newhart, where the men (including Elliott) celebrate at Bob's without the women, may be the funniest sitcom episode ever.

I saw a movie at a little theater in hollywood and while waiting outside talked to Jack Riley and helped him walking a bit. (he was older and had something with his legs that looked like they were horribly cramped up)

Mother once told me that when you get old you start reading the obits for people you know.
I just realized this is the online equivalent. And I feel old.
Have a happy weekend everyone!

Toots Thielemans, jazz harmonica player and unique personality, dead on Monday, August 22, 2016, in Brussels, Belgium.

Guys with a personality like his seem to be replaced with homogenized commercial packages; sad to see him/them go.

Glenn Yarbrough of the Lampliters died last week, big cheese in folk music in the early 60s, back when people liked that sort of thing. Sounds like an interesting guy, sold all his cars and houses to start a school once, later quit worldly concerns to sail the sea permanently.

That would be the Limeliters, although his biggest hit, Baby The Rain Must Fall, came as a solo act.
