The phrase: “Cowboy Bebop” would be very difficult to improve.

Checked out from the local library the Ken Burn’s film on Jazz. Seen the first four episodes (I think 12 in all) and it is very good. Worth viewing for any Jazz Fans.

I loved the Ken Burns series.

yeah, the Ken Burns series was amazing.
that, combined with the 'history of jazz' class i took in college (an elective Tu/Th class starting at 11:30, my first of the day and i was fully baked every time), solidified my interest in the genre that started the first time i heard Kind of Blue after making a $0.99 CD purchase on a whim.
having some understanding of the progression of styles and players, to me, makes things a whole lot more interesting.

#6 with the Miles Quintet 1967 (starting at 11:15) is just phenomenal

there is info out there that states that George Barnes was the first to use the electric guitar in a professional setting which he did in 1931

and that he was the first to be in the production of a professional recording with an electric guitar in 1938

as you can hear - he obviously was extremely gifted

this track is from his final performance in 1977

_______________-

Johnny Mac on an acoustic at age 34- he's now 80 - not sure if he's still performing or not

it's really hard to find the words to express the greatness of this guy

so I won't even try

the percussionist on this track is incredible - he's a monster

Marcus Miller on Bass, Sadao Watanabe on Saxophone and the whole lineup is A+. Larry Rosen's mix is incredible and the production is Japanese, probably the cleanest sounding live i've heard.

This is a really cool listen. Does this kind of jazz have a name?

(Opposed to giving names to jazz, btw, but...)

I used to find this stuff in the Jazz/Fusion section of stores so i always went with that. Some people say Jazz/Rock but feels like it stretches from "Hard Funk" to Jazz/Pop. Japan really digged this style, of course in their 80's Jazz scene but it leaked even into their Pop, Funk, Anime and Movie themes ...

Here's Yutaka Yokokura produced by Grusin & Rosen, traditional japanese instruments add another layer of goodness.

Fathers of this brand of Jazz to me are Bob James, Dave Grusin and Deodato

This banger was an anime OST, way to hit the childrens with the good stuff.

The Bob James vibe is strong.

I guess 'fusion' sums it up, but to be honest, I believe all jazz, and maybe all music, is fusion. But I heard a bunch of different elements in Grusin piece. There's a tune where the keyboards lead us through with a simple chord on the the one -- almost Monk-like. A horn lead that could have been from the 50s. The whole thing was nicely put together.
