Nice. You were MIA for a minute. Hope all is well in redeyeland.

It finally clicked for me with Sco. That last concert. Protocol is a nasty track

i'm pretty sure that bassist is Darryl Jones, who is currently playing bass for the Stones.

Toots got a google doodle today; it's his 100th birthday.

I think he is on guitar here with the great Grappelli

you might not think it is, but i do
may i present to you the greatest incidental jazz track in the history of human kind

I'm with you on this one. This is a great track. Trying to assign it a genre would be futile imo. If it's incidental jazz, I'm good with it.

You may not believe this, but this is the best cover of a Sonny Boy II interpretation in the history of the Fillmore East.

In the meantime, here's another band a work friend turned me onto yesterday.

it's all about the rhythm of the keyboard, bass, and syncopated drums.
mentally swap out the guitar(s) for a sax with the same boundless passion (think Trane, Stitt, Ornette, Pharoah, etc.)

yes Gregg, but Berry Oakley, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks are the backbone for the entire thing. for this particular exercise i'm ignoring the fact there are Gregg vocals on the track.
Skydog is the hinge. he's the one you swap out for one of the giants of reed instruments in the jazz hypothesis.

sorry for quoting a couple of my own posts, but i thought it to be the right thing to do when i did it, so there

as for the Wynton at Harvard series posted above: i was really disappointed in the way Wynton seemed to be simply reading lines for the first time off the teleprompter during several of the clips.

for anyone who hasn't watched it yet, i painfully recommend you FF through the speaking bits
the musicking bits are world class
