I have no hipster douche movies left to pick, so I'm in for 15. (I have plenty of douche movies left. Films of the 21st Century Draft)

I'm taking High Fidelity now, Nick Hornby wrote the screenplay based on his own book and Stephen Frears directed, successfully transplanted it to Chicago USA. Very good-spirited movie with a lot of smart talk about awesome music and men trying to get along with women as they both age and try to act like adults. Starmaking performance by Jack Black as a record store jerk/snob without a life. In some ways this is pretty middle brow fare tbh, but I still like it quite a bit.

I’m in for 15, although I’ll be scraping the bottom of the metaphorical movie barrel by then.

Oldboy was the one I thought *might* be sniped. I almost did it earlier but had to put Brick first because
Spoiler:
it establishes the high school connection.

And of course you didn't even have to ask which version I was talking about.

Oldboy 2003

Confidential to my ex-GF:

Thank you very much for taking me to see Oldboy. As it turns out, Oldboy and Old School are two entirely different flicks. I know you always liked Vince Vaughn (you always did like chubby guys), but you didn't seem at all disappointed--and I was delighted with it. I guess I was wrong about the bench in the police station. They weren't going to put the frat guys on it. Everything was in Korean and they were using subtitles, so I should have guessed.

I'm also sorry I blurted out the answer half way through the flick, but first of all, it was only the partial answer, and the only reason I did it was because I was sure I was wrong. I was just trying to be funny.

It's a great movie and a great pick for this draft because it ties the loose threads of so many other picks:
Spoiler:
I'm serious. Go no further unless you've seen the movie.
Spoiler:

Vengeance; re-vengeance; father-daughter bonding; high school; brotherly love: Dead Man's Shoes, Toni Erdman, Brick, and Oh Brother Where Art Thou.

It goes hurtling past the Shakespearean turmoils of Brick and lands squarely in the midst of the great Greek tragedies. Easily the best film of the millennium. Check out the original Korean version.

We'll see...

I've only seen two: Sexy Beast and Oh Brother, which were strong choices. I've put the others in the queue.

my 7th round pick:

Once, John Carney, 2007

I'm in love with this film. It's such a simple concept: 2 people meet, make music together, and (maybe) fall in love. Every so often a film comes a long and completely captures my imagination. Once is one of those films.

The stars, non-actors Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, are absolutely perfect, in both their performances and their songs. The scene where they join in on a song in a piano song is one of the most magical movie moments of my life. It made me tear up. I can't explain why.

One of my all-time favorite movies.

Pick 7

Hell or High Water

I wasn't sure if this would make the cut in a 10 round draft, but when this got expanded to 15 it's a shoo-in. Heck I might have drafted it i round 10 anyways.

How do you make a modern day western? Easy, just set it in rural Texas and have it starring cops and robbers with old fashioned views. It's such a great movie.

I'm sure that Kioshk will say that it's just the beauty of Texas, but I'm going to give a bit of credit to the cinematographer for the beautiful setting. It's got a great plot, great actors, great characters and it's gripping. It's tense has robberies, heists, shoot outs, stake outs, steak houses and everything else you could possibly expect from a western. It's even got a Native American.

Cops and Robbers, sheriffs and outlaws, cowboys and Indians, the little guy vs corporate America. It's got it all.

If you've not seen this then watch it soon. You'll love it if you like westerns and you'll probably love it even if you don't like westerns.

I love hell or high water despite the fact that it has the worst investigators ever.

the scene at the gas station was so epic.

Ben Foster is so awesome and I was really surprised and impressed with Chris Pine.

I'll take Bone Tomahawk. This was one of the biggest surprises I've had in recent memory. I went in with absolutely no expectations and came out of it absolutely blown away. Zahler certainly has a style that I find very compelling, and this was different from any movie I had seen before. Good stuff.

Round 7
Cell 211 (2009)
Daniel Monzon

Don't worry it's really me. I haven't been hacked and no one is holding a gun to my head forcing me to make this pick! It is actually a foreign movie, subtitles and all I normally avoid all foreign subtitled movies like the plague. But just sometimes one comes along that will just blow me away. Most I turn off 15 minutes in but this one is a major exception.

It is Spanish and a thriller about a prison riot. It won 8 Goyas awards (Spanish Oscars) and is really terrific. A new prison guard reports a day early for his new job. As he is getting shown around he gets injured and they put him into (the empty) cell 211 to lie down. But as this happens a prison riot breaks out and he is left behind. He must now blend in with the rioters. I was alerted to this movie by reading Roger Eberts outstanding review of it and his review is much better than anything I can say about it.

This is the Loungiest pick I will make in this draft. I will do an anti-lounge pick next round to balance things out

so far:
United 93
Catch Me if You Can
Almost Famous
Seabiscuit
Jersey Boys
Love & Mercy
Cell 211

Round 8
Pitch Perfect (2012)
Jason Moore

Most pretention film snobs will hate this movie, or at least say they do Secretly they have to love it. It's just a lot of fun as into looks into the cut throat, kill or be killed world of college acapella groups. Another music centric movie choice for me and even though I never knew I liked acapella the music is extremely entertaining. Large and talented ensemble cast with lots of humor. It was successful enough to spawn two sequels although they weren't as fresh as the original. This is a movie I will watch again and again.
