Seeing one particular, different guy begging on the street with maybe diabetes or whatever -- something that works that way -- who winds up losing fingers and limbs year after year on an impossible downward slide of misery and shame. I can't say I don't know entirely where his different shames came from, right or wrong, but the thought of it curdled my insides, and I always tried to say hello and be nice when I saw him. But I think he might have seen his own lost promise, heedlessness, occasionally randomly happy carelessness, when he saw me, and it killed him every time.

I was in a very, very far from happy place in my life at the time myself, the less said about that the better, but at least I could still walk straight and snappy and fake it. He couldn't even do that and it was impossible to fake a thing. He didn't know me at all and I didn't know him, but somehow all we had to do was bump into each other to feel lousy. I felt terrible for him, and it probably didn't help. He had likely read the eyes of many people who had looked at him and let a flicker of their own humanity pass through their gaze on seeing him, some maybe trying their best to hide it or put a bright face on it, and my carriage or expression or something about the way I walked to work in the morning came back to stab him like the same spear.

this is beautiful. Depressingly beautiful.
