Seeing the same perfectly healthy guy begging for money on the street three years after the first time you saw him.

... counterpointed by ...

Seeing one particular, different guy begging on the street with maybe diabetes or whatever -- something that works that way -- who winds up losing fingers and limbs year after year on an impossible downward slide of misery and shame. When I used to take the subway I used to bump into a guy like that on the way, and when he would see me, he looked so ashamed and uncomfortable he didn't even say anything. Sometimes he would give a smile that was kind of apologetic, and also like the mere sight of me shocked him back into the idea of what he once thought life was about or what it could give to him. I don't know, it set my head spinning.

I saw him lots of times when he was not begging, and he would actually stop begging when he saw me, as if he were too ashamed of what he had become and what he knew he would probably become. I saw him fall apart piece by piece over the years, each time a little more ashamed. I can't say I don't know entirely where his different shames came from, right or wrong, but the thought of it curdled my insides, and I always tried to say hello and be nice when I saw him. But I think he might have seen his own lost promise, heedlessness, occasionally randomly happy carelessness, when he saw me, and it killed him every time.

I was in a very, very far from happy place in my life at the time myself, the less said about that the better, but at least I could still walk straight and snappy and fake it. He couldn't even do that and it was impossible to fake a thing. He didn't know me at all and I didn't know him, but somehow all we had to do was bump into each other to feel lousy. I felt terrible for him, and it probably didn't help. He had likely read the eyes of many people who had looked at him and let a flicker of their own humanity pass through their gaze on seeing him, some maybe trying their best to hide it or put a bright face on it, and my carriage or expression or something about the way I walked to work in the morning came back to stab him like the same spear.
