I wholeheartedly agree that gregorio remain modded. It would be the only thing in this thread that would make it worthwhile.

I have other suggestions, if anyone's interested.

Like, a user group that can only OTB&C spammers - no regular bans or other powers, and for their service they can have a color name or change their under title at will, since that appears to be the most requested service.

At first when I could see the User Manager, I could OTBC. Now I can't anymore. Spank, Lattimer, can you still do this?

I can, but Mat restored me back to normal, almost... I can't IP check anymore.

If so my bad. You seemed very bothered by spank being mod and now you're happy so its all good.

Maybe I missed you being very concerned about security in general. If so sorry about that - keep on at Mat to take a minimal access approach.

Metaname has more than deserved this honor. Also, I should get a purple-colored title.

I think Mat's solution here is good, and it's also probably good that mods in low-ban forums who don't really need access to emails or birthdays don't get that access. Established mods in high-ban forums should, but likely conditional on handing over some personal info to Mat.

Just to clarify this one point, I was simply trying to clear up any confusion about my role in this matter - basically, I didn't have one.

Seems pointless to reply to the rest now as it appears everything's been dealt with and everyone's moved on, so...

If this happened I'd help out. I was aggressively reporting spam for a while but stopped after I ran out of funny comments to leave.

If I could just nuke them, then I wouldn't have to try and be funny which is a net positive for all involved.

Pretty surprised to find out that 'random' mods here have access to email-addresses.

For one thing, doesn't that make it possible for someone to make a script harvesting addresses and sell them on?

I mean, I'm sure we all know why you forgot to include that part
To help you out, it might just be posts like this that make it difficult for Chez to think that the only reason you are here is because you are worried about site-wide privacy.

There was an unrelated thread about site-wide privacy issues that got merged into one of the two about Spank and PU?

Either way, it would be on you to clarify that what you meant when you said that you hate that Spank was modded and doing moddish things that what you really meant is that you don't mind at all and simply don't like the idea of mods having access to personal information.

I would volunteer to be a SPAM killer. Although when I report SPAM it seems to get taken care of fairly quickly, so not sure how much it would help over the current system. Are normal mods wasting a ton of time dealing with SPAM?

If you're this bored, go back through this thread and pay close attention to the title of the thread in replies.

You SMPers can't expect people to hold your hands for the rest of your lives on stuff like this.

Probably not, because its really easy to get rid of.

The benefit is probably more on the side of reducing the amount of time between when spam is posted and when it gets deleted.

I pretty regularly removed spam first thing in the morning my time (Eastern Time: UTC -4:00) that had been up for a few hours.

So you are two different people in the different threads? Am I talking to the one who doesn't mind Spank being a mod and only cares about mods having access to personal data or are you the other one?

Giving other people the power of "SPAM killer"is dangerous. Basically the button to remove spammers is a "one touch ban". This wipes the person off the servers and all the posts associated with that person and can't be reversed. You could do it on a guy with thousands of posts. A normal ban can be reversed. It's like saying "You can't be president, but here's the nuke codes"

Edit: Actually removed in case we don't want that to be public. But, anyway, there are safeguards in place.

Correct, there are safeguards, and all the deletions are soft deletions, anyway. The posts could be restored.

Learnt something today. I guess I should ignore the "This can't be reversed" thing too

In any case, if it's not a big problem it probably doesn't need to be addressed. I was just thinking that if it's not any more trouble than hitting the, "report post," button it would be something I would be willing to do with no other benefits required.
