LoL, you can solve this pretty easily if you assume that the baseball has negligable friction thru flight. This obv isn't a good assumption, but if the frictionless solution is less than 100 yrds, the friction equation will def. be.

V(i) = 82 mph (said u could throw that fast)
theta = 45* (for ball to travel furthest distance w/ negl. friction)
y = 5 ft (initial displacement for height thrown from)

...so change V(i) to ft/s which is 120.27 ft/s .

Now initial y-direction vel. is (120.27)*sin(45) = 85.04 ft/s

X(t) = V(i)*t + (1/2)*a*t^2

Solving for t, you get t = 5.34 s

Now solving for x-direction using t = 5.34 and theta...

X(t) = Vx * t = (120.27sin(45)) ft/s * 5.34 s = 454.13 ft

So basically it is possible when thrown 82 mph and friction is neglected. Unfortunately, that still doesn't say anything about the actual outcome... My guess would be a big fat no thou, and I've watched a decent amount of baseball.

i doubt anyone could kick a football that high in the air, losing bet imo

this is so easily doable it's not funny.

if you're 6'3 you probably have a decent sized arm.
i was a quarterback in highschool and i could launch a football 60 yards with ease, 70 if i strained. I'm only 5'10.

i could probably rocket a baseball well over 100 yards. I'd take that bet any day.

300 feet is deffinately doable if you have a decent arm

NO WAY this is doable with a south paw. Opposable digits are key in throwing a baseball.

Best level or most ******ed poster.

i didnt read it all, so pardon if it is a repeat

80mph~=120ft/sec

120ft/sec thrown at a perfect 45 degree angle ~=450ft

http://library.thinkquest.org/11902/physics/range2.html

Glen Gorbous, a Canadian minor leaguer, who had a three year stint in the Majors from 1955 - 1957 still holds the record.

In 1957, after a running start, the ball left his arm at an estimated 120 MPH and it flew and flew and flew.

After all was said and done the baseball covered a total of 445 feet 10 inches before hitting the ground and breaking the old record by a whole nine inches.

Glen Gorbous broke Don Grate's record throw of 445 feet 1 inches set in 1956.

i'll take any action wanted on someone throwing a ball and reaching a height of 100 meters if we get it worded correctly with no BS. You'd have to throw it at 112mph to get to 127m with no air resistance. no to mention its just plain awkward to throw vertically.

When making my previous post I missed the part about throwing a baseball 100 yards straight up. Forget it, no way. I don't think any human is (or ever will be) capable of doing that.

100 yards horizontally... okay, like I said the record is just under 150 yards so it's at least possible. I'd take bets against most anyone but obviously some people would be able to do this.

Vertically though... come on.

I just did some basic physics on this because I am real bored. Roughly, if you threw the ball 80 mph at a 45 degree angle the ball would travel approximately 140 yards with no friction from air resistance. So I would suggest you find conditions with minimal air resistance (cold air, higher elevation) to attempt this stunt in.

Of course I have no idea how hard it is mechanically to throw the ball 80mph at a 45 degree angle. I imagine it would be much harder then throwing it straight horizontal from a mound.

I hate to ruin the fun for all you math geniuses breaking this down by mph, but that doesn't mean ****...In high school I could throw mid 80's and couldn't do this, yet our CF who couldn't crack 80 could throw it from the backstop over the centerfield fence

I was kinda hoping by now someone would have done a photoshop of a baseball player "attempting" to throw a baseball over good2cu's forehead.

Disappointed bbv

Physics is physics. All this means that regardless of the speed you could throw the baseball straight horizontally, the other guy could throw it harder at a better angle for travelling over the centerfield fence.

Obviously someones speed when throwing the ball straight does not translate directly into them being able to throw the ball with this velocity at an inclined angle, which is why OP's pitching speed may not be a good barometer of his success.

Also, how the ball spins might effect air resistance, although I do not know enough about baseball to be able to guage the effect of this.

95% of players in the big leagues can do this. 50% of college and prob 25% highschool ball players can do this. It is not difficult at all if your arm is in shape to do it. It will be extremely difficult to accomplish if you haven't thrown in years without blowing your shoulder out.
