Probably most of them could. You don't see them trying to throw it that far often, they are usually trying to throw is that far QUICKLY. That said, I'm still not sure what the chances are you can do this, but being able to throw 80 in HS certainly bodes well.

When outfielders throw a ball to home plate, they aren't going for distance, they are going for speed. Look at the trajectory. The ball does not arc up into the air, because this makes the throw take a longer time to get to home plate.

Like someone mentioned, the trajectory the ball needs to take in this prop bet is like a javellin throw, not like an outfielder throwing out a runner. There aren't a lot of people who can throw out a runner at home plate from 300 ft away on the fly, but that is a completely different type of throw than is required for the bet.

long tossing from 300 feet is the rough equivalent to being able to throw 90 mph. If you used to throw 80-81 you are going to have a very difficult time doing this.

I know a guy that can do this with a golf ball is it easier or harder with a baseball?

I played right and center field in highschool and I'm pretty positive I could have done this at the time. I think any major league outfielder could do this, but the reason you don't see them doing it, like other posters have said, is because it's a lot faster to have the ball go in a straighter arc and bounce once or twice than it is to throw it so that it lands at home plate on the fly. I think if you were able to have a running start and practiced/conditioned you'd definitely be able to do this. And at the people saying 100 yards straight up isn't possible, no ****, reading comprehension ftw.

Since this is BBV: In HS I threw out runners tagging from 3rd from 200-250feet. I had a very good arm. I know at that time that I could have done this prop bet easy. I also pitched and threw ~80.

I think what will matter is if you are still in good shape and if you could ever do this before. I do not think I could do it today.

Ok, we are attempting this tommorow, If you are in the ann arbor area we will try and do it at the Big house but if its closed we will do it on the marching band practice field.

We are going to try and take video so stay tuned...

ok say you throw 80mph....thats about 35m/s

Using the equations of motion the distance the ball will travel
d= (speed^2)/2*acceleration due to gravity
d= (35*35)/19.6

which is 62m or like 65 yards

to reach 100 yards you would need to pitch at 210mph....lol

LDO, That's just impossible no matter who you are, but he's throwing it from one side of the field to the other.

You might be able to do this if you get a running start, or something like that uhuh

To clarify this, we dont mean throwing the ball straight up and down, we mean from one goal line to the other

Learn some physics man:

Solving for initial velocity with unknown time

vf = 0 ft/s (at max height)
a = -32.174 ft/s2 (gravity)
x = 300 ft

Therefore
vi = 139 ft/s = 94.8 mph

This assumes zero air resistance and a perfectly vertical throw. Plus, just because you can throw 80 mph horizontally doesn't mean you could do it vertically. I say there isn't a single human being on the planet that could do this.

Well **** that changes everything. Then why add the "in the air" part?
