I use GoDaddy and have no problems with them, but I'm pre-emptively trying to move off their servers. I don't mind the overzealous selling of **** which makes up 90%+ of the complaints (only idiots fall for it) because they make up for it with some really cheap coupons usually featured on Slickdeals. But I have some issues with how they (don't) handle privacy, so I think namecheap is gonna be where I transfer eventually.

I've had zero problems with godaddy.

I've had good luck with Namiac (although that was years ago) and enom (but I have a reseller account there, lol).

Why not just stay at your current registrar and run your email through Gmail?

A lot of people dont have any bad experiences with them... but just be careful... if something does go wrong then you are in trouble.

Also, they tend to be very cheap for registering domains, but when you come to renew, it suddenly gets very expensive.

One thing I forgot to mention about Gandi is that they offer private registration as a default and free of charge.

Now that I've looked into it, this is probably what I'll do. I wasn't aware I could just make a mx-record and point it to Googles server to have this work so this looks like a great solution. Thanks all!

Probably moving my domain eventually anyway, but I'll hold off on that a little longer as long as my mail works.

Its really easy to setup... google has instructions for most registras.

Just remember that it takes about 24 hours for the dns records to filter through...

1and1 has been in the UK for a long time, pretty big name. expect to see multi-page ads, often inside covers in the tech mags. got a badass datacenter over here if I remember rightly. their advertising (in the publications I read at least) seems mostly targeted at the site-builder / store-builder crowd.

Prob not terrible, but I like my namecheap + hostgator

I had hosting with godaddy, shared but not the cheapest option. consistently dropped 10% of requests that involved database access. very poor. also has a messed up php setup, and an old slow mysql.

Sounds like you got a pretty good service....

my company has been using 1and1.com and seems pretty stable. I think we have them to host a virtual server and have had down town once... when somebody, (namely me) hit reboot instead of log off of the remote machine.

Back when I used to spend time reading message boards populated by domain resellers (read: squatters) all I saw about 1and1 were complaints. They despised them, and refused to use them. I don't think I ever learned why (or if I did, I've forgotten), but rarely have I seen such universal disgust for an organization.

GoDaddy domains have always been fine for me. But every company or person I've known that used their personal hosting have had infinite problems with them.

I'm fortunate enough to have a legacy grandfathered shared hosting package plan from Site5 which is really cheap. Their support and their products are amazing. The managed VPSes are way too expensive, though you're paying for their support - which is really the best out there IMO. I think I'd use Linode for US-based VPSes in the future. We use RedStation for UK-based servers and have had great success with them.

That company isn't very new.

I've used hostgator. They have amazing customer service, but it doesn't matter if you create a basic HTML static page with ten lines of markup, that page will take eeeeeeeeeeeeeooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnns to load.

Since they are the only company out there that will let you buy one month of service, you can use it to build a new site you aren't sure you want to keep or test out until you decide what to do with it.

If you don't have the 100 dollars to dump on a "maybe" or if you are simply too broke, they offfer a great option.

Okay: ~market~ and ~user~ testing. You know, build a site, hope it gets one million views/month, then decide to can it if it doesn't reach that.

(forgot I was talking to coders and not management )

I've used 1and1 for about 4 years (linux shared hosting and windows VPS) and have no major complaints. The service is reliable and I like to have domains and hosting in the same place and on the same bill rather than spread out all over the place.

The only semi-negative that I can think of is that their back end is heavy and kind of slow (they don't use cpanel). Overall though, they're basically a better/less expensive version of godaddy.

We used 1+1 at my old job for virtual servers. Support is bad to mediocre, but if you know what you are doing then they are great (because you don't need to use support very often). Very fast, cheap and stable.

This is a bad idea in general, but obviously not everyone will get bitten by it.

When the hosting company isn't a domain registrar that's very true. When you have full control of your domains it just makes things easier (but that's just my opinion).

Because everyone is listing their setup, I will chime in...

I use Gandi for domain registration (tho I still have one domain with Godaddy), and I use Amazon AWS for my hosting.

AWS is very cheap, and you obv have complete control over your setup. This is not what everyone is looking for, but if you are looking for a VPS, then you might want to consider it.

To be clear I don't use GoDaddy for hosting, not at all. Just domain registration.

I host everything on my own servers from SoftLayer, and ThePlanet before the merger.

http://aichallenge.org/

It seems a pity to me they decided to make it about creating a single "bot" for your whole colony (with global input)... IMO, it would have been way more interesting if it was about creating an AI agent for each ant (with local input only).

I guess they wanted to make it appeal to RTS players?

Juk
