Regardless of what happens, AT&T thinks nothing of sending your account number and name to a total stranger because a low-level call center employee misheard your email address, even against the protestations of the person who owns that email address

Ironically I think the ones that got deleted as spam were the ones that had the info (like billing address) that would let me impersonate him on the phone and take care of this myself. Nitwits.

Yeah DisplayPort is a new thing, you may or may not have display inputs on your monitors (most likely not, unless they are new). Not a big deal though for 1920x1200, since it can be cheaply converted to a hdmi: http://www.amazon.co.uk/High-Quality.../dp/B0031X3C4E

Likewise hdmi can become DVI in a similar manner http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000GDI6FC

Being linux there's prob some shell scripty way to make it switch what video it's outputting where, but I don't know much about this. a quick google found this page: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/ATI_Radeon_HDMI which seems to show ATI's linux driver looks fairly reasonable and will work for this. I think there's a lot of good info at avsforum htpc section too on ati / amd + linux
Thx for the help I think I'll get a DP->HDMI cable. The graphics card has 1xDP,1xHDMI,1xDVI so I'll hook up one HDMI and the DVI to the monitors and the DP to the TV (via converter) or alternatively the HDMI to the TV and the converted DP to a monitor.

I'm assuming this should work and it's not the case that you can only use two of the outputs at a time or something (which technically would still be enough for my scenario)

Eh and possibly the most noobish question of all...what slots does my motherboard need?
I have these:
- 3 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (green @ x16 mode, blue @ x8 mode, orange @ x4 mode)
- 1 x PCI Express 2.0 x1 slot
- 2 x PCI slots

But the newish graphics cards seem to be PCIe 3.0. Quick research shows that 2.0 is not a problem however I can't really see if I need one/two slots and whatnot. On the graphics card I can see a bigish yellow connection and a smaller black one. I'm curently looking at:
http://www.amazon.de/MSI-Radeon-Graf...ds=radeon+7770
or
http://www.amazon.de/Zotac-ZT-61003-...ds=geforce+650

+display port adapter cable for the first one. Leaning second though because it probably provides more power at the expense of a closed source driver. Also concidering the 650 Ti which is about 140ish

Just from my quick eyeball test

I'm assuming they hook into one of these PCIex16 slots (the yellow part in the middle and the black part on top/bottom)

Edit: Just saw that my mainboard says:
- Supports ATI™ CrossFireX™, Hybrid CrossFireX™ and 3-Way CrossFireX™

So my guess is I should get an ATI card (not an NVIDIA) :P

yeah should be fine the scenario where "can only use two simultaneously" is where a 7770 has say 1x DVI, 2x HDMI and 1x DP - the DP is separate chip, but the DVI and HDMIs are somehow sharing 2 chips so in this case it can't run 4 and to run 3 DP must be utilized. My friend had an annoying day or two waiting for a DP -> HDMI cable because of just this surprise!

DP is pretty sick actually, the wiki is worth a read if you're interested in this sort of thing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort

any x16 lane PCIe will work, 2.0 / 3.0 is just more faster (not important with these low end cards). Most of these cards will need two slots of space however to accommodate their cooling fans.

I have a Geforce 650 Ti myself, it won't run both it's two DVIs and the HDMI at the same time (prob a similar issue to the radeon described above, but I read that it should - so maybe a lol-winxp issue). Also 650 Ti I bought about 1 week before 650 Ti "Boost" came out, which is far superior for a small price increase - consider that.

I'm not sure what you mean by "small black connector", it could be SLI connector (not relevant) or power supply (important! you will need to have a 6 pin power supply connection to it, and a decently enough rated PSU prob 550W+)

Yeah I read about "two PCI slots" and panicked a bit but I take it it's just a space issue i.e. it'll cover up two slots but really just needs to be plugged into one.

Nice. You're doing better than me. I keep killing interviews and getting "we're kind of looking for someone more senior"

Then don't interview me. Or, better yet, actually look at some code I've written and judge me off that rather than my joke of a resume.

So tilted right now. My years of slacking off make me undesirable to talk to in the hottest market ever.

I obviously don't know your specific case but in general I'd say you're probably not killing the interviews as much as you think you are. If they're interviewing you they're at least considering hiring you with your experience level.

When I interview I scale the interview to the candidate. A bad candidate is going to have a short interview with no hard questions. An amazing candidate is going to have a long and really hard interview. It's totally possible for the ****ty candidate to think they did better than the amazing candidate.

Again I'm not saying this is what is happening with you but make sure you're at least thinking about this.

It's hard to explain. I've basically only had one interview which had any real technical questions, which was basically 3 pretty simple questions (including fizz buzz, lol). The guy flat out told me I answered those questions great, and that they needed someone more senior. It's super tilting because I don't think the guy even looked at my resume before spending the time to do a screenshare/goto meeting.

Everyone else I've talked to has been sort off more of a screening process. My strongest skillset as a developer is my ability to communicate/sell myself. I can tell if someone has no interest in talking to me, and I can assure you this hasn't been the case.

I had a google hangout yesterday with a company that just raised a lot of money. They have an opening for a full stack rails engineer. Great, just what I'm looking to do for now. I talk for a while about the rails app I built at my last job, and the angularjs/backbone apps I've built lately. I then get the question "do you know what jquery is"? I'm expecting given the way things have gone lately to never hear from this guy again either.

To be fair I'm going to do a hackathon type get together with a few guys next week for a well funded start up, and am meeting with a few techstars companies as well next week. It's really a matter of time before I find something. I think I may have to end up at a really small for now, similar to my last job.

I'm just sort of life tilted right now for a variety of reasons, and mostly because I can't get past a lot of these screening interviews because of what I know for sure is my resume. If I kept going in for later round interviews where I wasn't getting offers, that's a different story.

You're probably overestimating this. Your first screening is your resume which can be as little as scanning for keywords like "javascript" and "HTML". The phone screening is where you need to be able to communicate well and more or less say the things the screener is looking for - NOT TECHNICAL STUFF. The worst thing you can do is bore an HR person on the phone with going into detail about your knowledge. Talk about what you could do for the company, not what you know - and you're definitely not being eliminated at this point because of your resume.

How many books on interviews have you read? Do you go to job websites every day? How many meetup.com events have you been to? I got my current contract position because I gave my business card to a mid level guy at a javascript meetup.

I go to meetups pretty often... going to one tonight. I don't go to job websites because the type of jobs I want aren't listed there.

I know what you're saying about non-technical stuff. I'm saying my strength is my ability to not sound like some shy/awkward dev. It has been more a factor of sort of randomness than anything.

I was just super tilted last night from life in general, I don't think the job hunt has been going terribly. I initially was having trouble even getting a phone interview because my resume is so weak, but I have leveraged my network as hard as possible (just moved to Boulder from Boston), and I have about 5 meetings/hackathon type things lined up in the next week, so I doubt it's more than two weeks before I have an offer.

I'll probably end up at another 3-5 person company, just because I do enjoy that sort of size/scale.

I'm starting a new side project startup soon (just waiting to get access to a new bank account). The website is:

https://www.bitcoin-anchor.co.uk/

The MVP is a place in the UK to buy Bitcoins. Currently in the UK it can be difficult so I hope to bridge the gap a little. Eventually I should be able to fully automate the entire site.

If anyone has feedback it would be greatly appreciated, I respect all your opinions! Feel free to try to break it!

I put in an order using a bitcoin address found on wikipedia and on your confirmation page you have a typo.

"This it the Bitcoin address your Bitcoins will be sent to."

Should be "This is ..."

I also think you need to do something to ensure people don't forget that page. What if I don't bookmark the page or copy down the ID number? Also what if I wrote a script to peak around URLs that have valid UUIDs in them? It seems unlikely I would find a match but it's possible. I don't like the idea that anyone with enough computing power can openly see my bitcoin address and information relating and info related to bank transfer statuses. That alone would make me never use your site.

Since there's no notion of an identity it might allow people to pretend they are someone else for situations where they say they forgot their reference number, etc..

there are 36^32 possible ids by my estimation. I'm gonna go ahead and venture that even if there is absolutely no throttling on requests you don't need to be worried.

The way we solved that on quickbitcoin.co.uk was to store a session id in a cookie. Typically people use the same computer, so if they have an open order and they revisit the site, we recognise their session id and they are shown a link to their order.

This obv has implications if people are sharing computers... but buying bitcoins from an internet cafe is not recommended in any situation.

Part of my job at work is organizing the product pictures. Its hard to organize a decent schema to organize the pictures in a way that is easy to organize and removes duplication as much as possible.

I'm not involved in clothing, but I created this XML to show the gist of what I am doing:

Code:
<shirts>
  <boys>
    <rayon>

      <long-sleeve>
        <single>
          <large>
            <red>
            </red>
            <blue>
            </blue>
            <white>
            </white>
          </large>

          <medium>
          </medium>

          <small>
          </small>
        </single>

        <pair>
        </pair>
      </long-sleeve>

      <short-sleeves>
      </short-sleeves>

      <swatches>
        <red>
        </red>
        <blue>
        </blue>
        <white>
        </white>
      </swatches>

    </rayon>
  </boys>
</shirts>
The main idea is to go from general to specific. The <swatch> tag shows how I try to remove the duplicates, since keeping swatches for each individual tree would get cumbersome quickly. Grant it, this isn't a big deal with this example, but when there are 20+ items that all share said swatches, then its impossible to track. Just think of how it would go once there is boys, girls, children, men, women, long-sleeve, halter, short-sleeve... etc etc etc.

In all total, there are about 20,000 pictures. Since I work on a fresh area and the pictures used elsewhere can't be used on my stuff, I created my own picture tree. I currently have about 3,000 pictures, but I expect to get over 10,000 in the near future.

To say the least, the other area is a disaster area. When I first started, they were putting my pictures in that area. I have to re-upload data files constantly, and all of my uploads were blowing up since pictures would be renamed, moved at random, and lost, so I'd have to go through the process of fetching the urls all over. Now, the problem isn't so bad, plus I can use find/replace, which takes away a lot of the manual work I was doing before. I'm pretty stringent on keeping the area clean.

I don't have to do the photos myself. That is left to the PhotoShop guy. Originally, I wanted him to simply overwrite the pictures on the server so I wouldn't have to worry about seeing if the pictures were new, but he didn't do that. I talked to him about it the other day and I guess he couldn't do it and keep himself organized.

I was wondering how professionals deal with this stuff. How do you keep yourself from submitting urls paths without blowing up every time it is done? How is it possible to keep everything organized so that it works out okay and keep everyone working together on a decent level? Since he wasn't able overwrite the pictures, I just told him to make sure he lets me know when he uploads new images so I know.

I'm thinking about writing a program that would read in the urls from the excel document and checks to see if the urls are valid. As I said, this isn't as large of a problem as it used to be, but it is still quite time-consuming when things don't upload properly.

I'm also thinking about creating an image resize program for the PS guy because he spends an extraordinary time resizing pictures so that I can use them.

Edit to add: I forgot to mention that all of this is done using FTP. To say the least, I find this program mystifying.
