Simple Wireless sells a portable wifi hotspot that runs on the T-Mobile network. They actually sell you a T-Mobile hotspot, lol. It is unlimited data for $65 / month. I'm not sure what the up / down but I've had no problems pushing and pulling my large databases to the server, downloading 1/2 gig updates from Fedora, or watching YouTube.

I'm on normal wifi now so I don't need the wireless for now, but I'm happy enough with it that I don't think I'd ever go back to Time Warner when it comes time to get my own internet again. I used to have 50/10, and I don't notice much of a difference.

I don't see the deal on the site, so I guess you'd have to find a B&M dealer.

All I see listed there are 1.5 GB for $20 and 4GB for $40.

Unlimited for $65 seems like a good deal in an area with strong T-Mobile service.

ah, that was not clear to me, particularly since he mentions using a cable, which the iphone wifi hotspot does not need

Yeah, it is possible they don't heavily advertise that deal (possibly breaks MAP rules) or it may only be in Austin. I don't know.

Speaking of internet in Austin, Google Fiber is pretty much only found at Starbucks and it is blazing fast. Unfortunately, many apartments can't be hooked into, and apparently people are waiting over a year for it.

The real screwy part, if this is true, is that Google just went knocking on doors and said "pay us a full year + deposit upfront." If you didn't pay it up, fiber would never be available to buy again. I don't trust the source of this information very much, but the roll out is pretty slow and it sounds like it will never be complete for residents. No worries though, plenty of laundromats have it.

That sounds like nonsense, and I day this as someone who's lived in two places that got fiber.

Try public libraries, the few I've tried had free wifi that wasn't filtered. Variability in how fast they were or saturated but free...

I might have to look into some kind of cel solution. I have had my iphone long enough I can unlock it. Worth it so I can tether? And can I still tether only by unlocking?
Get your company to pay for a mifi ? Starbucks is not an office btw

The instructions I found online said you have to hook up the iphone with a cable to get the hotspot working the first time.

Not true from my experience. Connect your iPhone to a wireless network and then use the hotspot. However, not sure your VPN will connect to your hot spot. Should be easy to try. Go to iPhone hot spot setting, enable the hot spot, either note the password for the hot spot or change it to one you want, go to your notebook, look at the available networks, connect to your iPhone, and then try to connect to your VPN.

To enable personal hotspot on this account, contact AT&T at 611 or visit blah blah

I bet I have to pay.

suzzer, it may be possible to rent a desk for a day at one of those hackerspaces if you are traveling through cities that have those.

Assuming my VPN doesn't block that too.

Also if you're traveling with Airbnb, they should typically have the same wifi that you might have at home which should allow VPN.

Well the idea is on some days I would be mostly driving, then stop in at a Starbucks for meetings. It's just an idea I had that I haven't fully fleshed out yet.

My phone is over 2 years old so I guess I am still on the old AT&T unlimited data plan which they don't offer anymore. I assume that's a better deal than what I could get now. So before I take that plunge, I need to find out if I can even use my work VPN over a phone hotspot.

Yeah. I pay by hour about $8 hour in bay area. It's cheaper if you buy for week or month.

So I've been thinking about converting some of my project to Clojure. The lion's share is written in Python and PL/pgSQL.

I'm using Python because all the APIs I'm using have Python libraries. I'm using PL/pgSQL to reduce round trips and because it is just super fast.

I'm also using Python because it is basically a universal language, but since I'm getting a ton of clones and no pull requests, I'm not sure if this matters.

The problem is that the page rendering and some calls to the database are a bit slow. Every project I've built in Clojure is pretty much instant, even on slow internet connections.

The upfront cost would be a bit much, but in general, generating HTML is much faster to code in Clojure. So, a little upfront pain would probably pay off in the long run.

The new stack would be a hybrid of Clojure, Python, and PL/pgSQL.

Is this idea nuts? Yes, speed is a high priority for me.

11pm, car pulls up, stops next to my driveway, turns on hazards, after 10 minutes I walk out, knock on the window, couple looks at me, opens window, I say "When your parents said you should go to the gym, I don't think this is what they meant".

When I had at&t and had unlimited data they wouldn't allow me to add tethering unless I dropped off the unlimited. So I got a clear hotspot instead. It was about $30 a month. It ran off the sprint network and was pretty reliable. All the major carriers have some sort of hotspot available.

How much traffic do you get? What's your target p50, p99? How is the database calls slower in python? Isn't it mostly network latency? Most web apps are not CPU bound so the exercise seems fruitless.

It's not really a website with a load of traffic. There is a demo, but it is more for end-users to clone and use, but it could be under a lot of stress, depending on the companies that use it. Think about 100 users stressing it all day.

It's not so much the database calls, but the page rendering that appears slow. The database stuff is pretty optimized as it is. Pingdom shows some js stuff that I was planning to remove anyways is causing some issues. Eh, back to the drawing board, I guess.

I'm probably nuts, since Pingdom says these pages load in under 500ms, but it still feels slower than I'd like it to be, especially on my local machine. It isn't so slow on a server.

I just ordered a company phone which supposedly is hotspot-capable and VPN-friendly. Although my luck with these internal corporate things has been abysmal so we'll see.

I've never had a company phone before. Not really nuts about them being able to track my every movement.
