For OSX, you can use QuickTime Player to record screen and iMovie to edit. Both typically are built in and free.

Team manager doesn't seem to be too pleased with me spending work time to work on non-work stuff. I have almost nothing to do and anything that is assigned to me usually amounts to adding/tweaking a few lines of html/js. How would you respond to him if he keeps getting ancy about me working on personal stuff @ work? I ask him every day if there's any tasks he wants to assign to me and the answer is rarely ever yes (and in the cases where it is yes, its incredibly minor).

Make it positive. Ask him to meet with you to go over your schedule for the next month. Send it in an email so you have a record. Ask him when he'll be free for such a meeting in the email. If he doesn't respond its on him. If he does, have a meeting, put a schedule together in writing. That is how I'd handle it more or less FWIW.

This isn't an issue where he's unreachable. I've communicated to him on numerous occasions how simple the changes are that he's asking me to implement. There have been times that its literally a slight change to a single loc. That's it. I would expect him to say at that point "well if that's the case heres [insert tasks] you can get started on after that" but that's never happened.

I can't just go make changes willy nilly. Any change has to be approved by marketing. I have implemented 'unapproved changes' before and been asked after if marketing approved it. I've gone through our system looking for pending tasks (I do that every day) and there are never any (or they are sitting unassigned in groups I don't have access to). I don't know what else I can/should be doing.

maybe talk to manager and ask if there's any additional depts you can help out, any more responsibilities you can take on

Does this seem like a temporary thing? If so, ride it out.

If not, start looking for another job, either inside or outside your company.

Unfortunately, people are really pidgeon-holed so asking for tasks that aren't delegated to my team is likely to get a response of "person[x] will be implementing those features when hes done with project[y]". Backend guys never work in frontend code and vice versa.

Hence why I'm trying to expand my horizons. I don't want to move into another job where I'm in a similar scenario to the one I'm in now.

We are currently in the process of transitioning all our legacy php code to go. After talking to head of dev ops, looks like I have a real shot of getting assigned to some re-writes in go. That would be pretty sweet imo.

Worked amazing! this is exactly what I was looking for!!!! I uploaded a demo of a pacman level editor I made in C#, link is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEaaQLokxsk

Is this okay you think? its meant to go inline on a page of mine where I demo projects I've done on a website for cs 401, im making a portfolio / resume / etc site about myself. this is where it will go inline on the page...

Spoiler:
(i zoomed out a lot so entire page can be seen)

I found a place to get open licensed music to put something in background.

edit: should I give a link to osb in video description? seems like a nice thing to do...

I'm really glad I was helpful

Are you asking about video positioning? I'd put it closer to top or to the part of the text that is the most relevant. And btw adding music was a nice touch!

The text will be a description about the project. It's just sample text thats in there now. The level editor is for a pacman re-creation I did in C# using windows xbox platform, i forget the name. You think there will be any problems showing a video of the game I made? I never released it, was just trying to practice programming.... but its basically a pacman remake except with a bunch of custom levels instead of the default level in the original game.

edit: I mean I want to post a video of the game on youtube but I'm unsure about copywrite and all that stuff.

I'm sure more experienced guys can chime in, but I don't see how this can be an issue. You're not profiting, you're not advertising it as something it is not and fwiw this kind of practice is very common in coding world (when building portfolio).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU2QBy4Kugc this is a link to a video demo'ing it.

edit: ill try to meet with my cs prof in her office hours tomorrow and see what she thinks. hopefully I can use the video (and project) in my portfolio otherwise I will be pretty upset.

I googled it and apparently its not yet in the public domain and I saw something about they did a DCMA (or something like this) against a guy that had a pacman game and wasnt making money off of it.

Congrats.

So the advice you got is great, only thing I'd add is that you should still be looking for a new job. It sounds like your middle management is just ****, and that never bodes well.

As an educational student, you can get around some copyright law. Also true for review purposes, though YouTube would have you believe that's not true.

The idea was to communicate in writing vs. verbally. Commitment on paper is something that he has to pay attention to and something you have to back you up. It is a cya thing.

One of the best managers I ever worked would basically tell the team that hey we have nothing to do for a bit, to take a break, do what you want but don't get into trouble:

flex support is pretty decent now. unless you have to support ie9 and below, you should be ok with most of the features. and if you are unlucky enough to have to support those older browsers, you should be able to achieve the same thing i did with "display:table" and friends.

EDIT: also, try this instead, i think that other link got screwed up and was missing something: http://jsbin.com/hekozow/1/edit?html,css,output
http://codepen.io/chriscoyier/pen/obNNRa sigh. Doesn't look like its on the radar to be fixed. Fun afternoon. So to recap, to make a "bottom up" style of chatroom where the chats start at the bottom of the container there are 3 options:

1) The above option, which doesn't work with overflow/scrollbars at all.

2) Flip the container vertically, and then reflip the contents/chat. This causes the scrollbar direction to be backwards...

3) Have an invisible "pusher" element that slowly gets smaller but that doesn't work with multi-line chats without some really skanky calculation.

Front end web dev in 2016 was supposed to be easier.

Just spent 2 hours pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my polymer inline element styles weren't working.

Turns out I had this:
Code:
<style>
  h1: {
    color: red;
  }
</style>
Instead of this:
Code:
<style>
  h1 {
    color: red;
  }
</style>
Argh! Would be nice if it threw an error or something. I kept going over and over the tutorial. They keep changing it like crazy so I thought maybe I had the wrong version. I just couldn't see the colon problem.

wtfamireading.jpg

div.container
--div.inner
----div.chattext
----div.chattext
----div.chattext

.container {
position:relative;
overflow-y: scroll;
height: $somefixedheight;
}
.inner {
position: absolute;
bottom: 0;
left: 0;
width: 100%;
}

protip: flexbox is worthless **** only used on portfolio sites from recent bootcamp grads who don't know css

edit: actually the overflow:scroll might belong on the .inner with a max-height equal to the container. either way, don't use flexbox.

here I made one, http://jsbin.com/wewasupowa/edit?html,css,output

I see what you mean in that you can't use just css to keep the scroll position at the bottom. But if it's a chat application and you're using js to manipulate the dom anyway, why not just set the scroll position via js?

Pretty sure he wants it the other way, where the newest stuff is at the top instead of the bottom. I actually have no idea if that's harder or not, because I hardly know anything about JS.

As a somewhat reluctant JS learner, this is something that bugs the **** out me. So much stuff, when it's not done right, just silently fails. No errors or warnings or log messages or anything. It just doesn't work.

ETA: that combined with magic properties. Forgot to set the id in some specific way? Silently doesn't work!
