Well, I accepted a job offer and I guess I'm resigning my current job tomorrow

My old place is definitely hiring.

The new place is AlienVault - they make malware and intrusion detection software.

Nice - congrats! I dream of quitting my job one day. But they got me handcuffed to that 22% bonus.

Congrats, Rusty. I was wondering if you were quitting over at the old place. Is this just from general boredom or due to the fact you were the oldest by 10 years.

Congrats rusty! Sounds like a move you'll be happy to make based on your comments about your current job!

Yeah... I had originally expected to quit right after they paid bonus. I (thought) I had a job lined up but it turned out they were pissed about me waiting for the bonus and pulled it back. Bonus ended up being smaller than expected, also.

Well, I wasn't the oldest (other guy on my team is a few years older) but definitely I'm up there. The quality of my immediate team was pretty good but overall I don't think we're headed in the right direction (maybe, not in any direction). There are huge things that need to be done, no one will tackle them.

Yeah, I had a really mind boggling conversation with the hiring guy. He was like "you know, lots of people made sacrifices to come work here..."

Yeah, ok, but we're talking about 15% bonus, paid once a year. I could buy a car with this. And all I wanted was about 3-4 weeks wait. They wouldn't do it.

on the plus side, he apparently thought you were so valuable to his company that surely they'd perish were they not able to get you on and working asap

I always learn map/reduce when I need it, then forget how it works. I think the poop emoji has solidified it for good this time.

Btw that guy has a great series of videos.

This is part 7 of a series. The first few might be pretty basic for experienced JS devs. But they're all entertaining.

You don't use map filter reduce regularly? Surprising

I don't do anything anymore regularly except attend meetings. Before that it was mostly node stuff. Didn't have a ton of use for it.

huh I use map and filter all the time in my code wonder what I'm doing differently. Reduce not so much but find all the time too. [].includes is pretty nice now too.

I think it might be a style thing. I use map/reduce type stuff in python all the time. The guy I work most closely with almost never does, he prefers loops/ifs.

Seems language specific. No multi-line lambdas in python probably means more loops that you might use in ruby for example (which does has multi-line lambdas).

Yeah, although python is fine with having little functions inside your function scope and so I use a fair bit of that. I actually think inline functions can get kinda out of hand in a lot of cases.

indeed, a style a thing. your style is "good programmer" and his style is "bad programmer"

wasn't expecting to like this, but i agreed with everything he said and thought he did good job distilling the argument. especially appreciated that he avoids the standard middle-of-the-road "it depends" non-position towards inheritance, and instead rejects it wholesale.

Yeah, I've always thought inheritance felt wrong for Javascript - and I came from a Java background. Maybe it helped that I was doing Javascript before it even had inheritance Also that prototypical vs. class-based inheritance in JS is so damn confusing with no real consensus.

Our node stuff is nothing but closures and it's glorious. It's so fun to program because you just build and design fast and loose, add in what you need when you need it, refactor when necessary. The point about the robot dog just nailed it. A little bit of redundancy is ok imo if it gives much greater code clarity and feature independence.
