haha I wish I could. People already think I am crazy taking 4 CS courses each quarter. I won't be able to do 5 CS courses and try to interview for a job at the same time.

Image processing sounds more like writing the filters and plug ins that the artistically inclined use to make better images.

I'd have gone with optimization. Image processing is very domain specific and may or may not ever be useful in your career.

Of course, if something seems interesting/fun to learn and you want to take it regardless of how useful it might be, that's always a good reason - but I suspect if that was a factor here, you wouldn't have had to ask us.

See that was my reasoning for picking it It sounds like it touches on plenty of potentially interesting areas, and would perhaps give a good idea if those were interesting enough to delve deeper - given the description someone at the point in their career they aren't really sure what they want to do so long as it isn't web dev.

Yeah that was really good. I've kind of done that instinctively for a while. If something is hotly contested it probably doesn't matter which way forward you go - as long as you go forward. That's how I feel about the endless debate on front-end JS frameworks. Just make your best guess and pick one. Probably doesn't matter that much as they'll all be dead in 5 years.

Most people here disagree with the way I do things but can't help myself. Latest contact with an (external) recruiter:

She emails me a job
I say "I need to know salary range"
She emails it back to me immediately
We talk on phone and she mentions how there's virtually no unemployed developers here and market is really tough for her
She asks my current salary and say I can't discuss that and what I'm looking for is in the range she said this job is looking for and that'll be fine
I send her resume
She says "HR needs to know your salary"
I say remove me from consideration

lol. I am completely out of ****s to give with people trying to treat developers this way in this market. Don't care if it makes me miss "opportunities".

Pretty sure this is rather abusive practice to anyone.

is it against the law to lie to a recruiter?
** UnhandledExceptionEventHandler :: OFFICIAL LC / CHATTER THREAD ** Quote

Probably not but I think it's a standard question on job applications which lying on is usually grounds for termination.

I'm hiring someone right now and my boss wants to know her current salary. She told me the number she wants, and while it is at the top of the range, I am cool with it, I didn't ask her what she is currently making because I don't give a ****.

His reasoning was that maybe she is asking for a 50% raise, but even if she was I really wouldn't give a ****.

You are either about production, or you are pretending to be, and I'm 100% only about production.

What dumb logic. If he's down to hire her at the number she wants, then obviously she deserves a 50% raise if that's what she's asking for.

That's what I'm saying.

Fortunately I work with reasonable people and I have approval to make the offer without knowing what she is making.

I was also able to turn it on him and say "well I wouldn't want you to find out she is asking for a 50% raise and sour on her, because I want to hire her even if that is the case".

Checkmate

When I have good prospects I won't answer that question. If I'm somewhat desperate I will. It's a bull**** question that is designed to hopefully hire you cheaply.

I'm in a weird limbo right now between my old role and new role. I've pretty much offloaded all the responsibilities of the old role, and am struggling to get much from the new role except "Go read up about XXX". Ok that took a few hours and I even built a prototype. Now what? Go read up some more. Look at Angular 2.

Anyone need any contract work help for the next couple weeks?

But, if she knows the market value of her work, how can we pay her under market value?!

I've done a fair bit of it. But it's been about 9 years. I'd chew on something if you have it. It would be fun to get back into it.

The words 'fun' and 'PHP' have never before been uttered in the same sentence
