Actually I spoke too soon - I'm in the process of seriously considering the other, much more lucrative offer. And not just the money either - I think this may genuinely be a much better opportunity. A lot to sleep on.

I had a weekend to decide between 3 offers. It was pretty intense. Not sure I picked the right one.

I certainly dont know the Bay area, but most programmers I know are lazy, just get the job done and go home types. Seems like as long as youre into what youre doing and trying to always improve, your outlook is fine. Hopefully thats not naive

The average programmer is really pretty darn mediocre. They might cut it as pure code monkeys, but as soon as you need to have domain knowledge, problem solving ability, creativity, communication skills, or prioritization skills they're practically useless.

I need 2p2's input on this. Trying to decide which class to take, Digital Image Processing or Intro to Optimization?

I guess I should have included course descriptions on this

Digital Image Processing:
Quote:
Introduction to the fundamental concepts of digital signal and image processing as applicable in areas such as multimedia, graphics, AI, data mining, databases, vision, or video games. Topics include image representation, space- and frequency-domain transformations, filters, segmentation, and compression.
Intro to Optimization
Quote:
A broad introduction to optimization. Unconstrained and constrained optimization. Equality and inequality constraints. Linear and integer programming. Stochastic dynamic programming.

I mostly lurk here, but what are your career goals? Without knowing much context I'm probably voting for the image processing one though.

Although answer could change after feedback. I never got an opportunity to take a good optimization course and regret it, but I'm in an extremely math-heavy field.

Career wise, I'm hoping to do something in that doesn't have to do with mobile or web development. I'm more interested in the math and lower level side of things, which I guess would be more towards Intro to Optimization.

But then again, Image Processing does sound interesting. I think I'll try and get the Intro to Optimization course first. It's an graduate course but there are 20 spots open for undergrads so there still is a chance I won't be able to get in though I have high priority.

Digital Image Processing:

Intro to Optimization
Digital image processing will always come in handy.

As far as the other, maybe some of our computer science grads with real world experience can chime in.

Image processing is likely to have a lot of math FWIW

"Doesn't" = does? Otherwise that doesn't say much...

Agreed.

Didn't mean that it doesn't, just that the optimization stuff is probably more useful specifically for the math guys, where image processing is much more common.

I was thinking it was mostly working with Photoshop, duh. It would be good though to understand the underlying concepts to all the stuff Photoshop does.

Yea I mean "doesn't", which I guess doesn't say much either. I guess I still can't make up my mind what I want to do. I just don't see myself gluing stuff together and making CRUD apps. But that might be where my career will head afterwards.

And yea both image processing and intro to optimization will be math heavy. I'm not the best at math but I think I do better than average in comparison to my peers.

I thought 2p2 was going to make it a slam dunk choice for intro to optimization, so now I'm at cross roads on which one to take. By the way both professors have terrible reviews on ratemyprofessor. So I'll have to pick my poison.

Digital image processing seems like a really cool thing to be exposed to given all the current attempts at AI image recognition, etc.

Seems like it would have a lot of potential application to the real world, vs. optimization seems like something more "school-like"

I'd go for the digital image processing

Another vote for digital image processing here - just applied math here alone I think makes it worthwhile. Signal processing in general is one of those things I always wish I had studied because it's not easy to get your head back into that kind of stuff later in life.

I would have suggested intro to optimization. They are both good choices. Your goals seem to align more with the latter.

I was referring to Barrin's comment about leaning towards the optimization class because he was more interested in math stuff. Image processing sounds like something for the more artistically inclined but transformations and compression and stuff can quickly turn into some pretty complex math problems which math guys should find interesting.
