This person is on personal phone calls for about an hour a day. She doesn't even try and hide it. Combined with the fact that she comes in late between 30-45 mins and takes 1.5 hour lunch she is basically stealing over 2 hours from our company a day. And she's been here for longer than 5 months. I'd be surprised if she keeps her job for another month.

Just curious, why?

Find out everything you wanted to know about a City (and then some): http://www.city-data.com/city/Seattle-Washington.html

That will give you all sorts of livability metrics such as crime, pollution, cost of living, taxes (property, etc), schools, etc...

As someone who has been audited by the Oregon Dept. of Revenue, I would much prefer the sales tax. hahah

Anyone with much experience using the Solver in Google Spreadsheets?

I'm trying to use the Solver for a very similar calculation to what you will find in this article
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...x#BMsamplefile

When I run the solver, google tells me it can't do it bc it is "nonlinear", but the article above states that it is specifically "linear".

In the cells involved in the "Solving" I have some simple SUMPRODUCT formulas but I need the cells the solver changes to remain binary, either 0 or 1. Maybe that is the problem?

B/c of Tyler, I'm e-rich bitch! Also helps that I was being courted by some decent employers and had some options to work with.

How would you go about creating a site like this?

I feel like the background & typography would be more difficult to create and implement than it looks.

Specifically I'm curious how you would create that greyish background effect and how you would make the text look so nice on top of it.

Man I'm getting pretty good at pulling data using sql. Just learned how to use coalesce for the first time for pulling data from multiple columns when you know only one of them will be non-null.

For example coalesce(cola, colb, colc) will return the first non-null value.

You're thinking too hard - you can blur the image in Photoshop and if you right-click on the text in Chrome and click "Inspect element" you can see exactly what font they are using and what CSS rules are in effect. I know next to nothing about CSS, but I'm pretty sure I can clone that site with some effort.

You could probably just use Bootstrap. They aren't using it vanilla, but they are definitely using elements of it with some custom additions for CSS.

Just because I was implicitly asked to troll: “You’re lying to me to attempt to get me to compromise my negotiating position.”

Friggin' great article. Even those numbers are a bit too high for me to ponder, I'll definitely remember to ask for an extra 10% when someone shoots 10 / hour at me.

San Jose/Valley - Center of the tech world. Biggest startup scene. There's always someone hiring. Warm weather. High cost of living.

Seattle - Rains a lot, liberal culture, good tech scene.

Portland - I've heard great things about Portland. Seattle on a smaller scale.

Dallas/Ft Worth - Apparently it's a growing and huge tech scene. Less startups but many big companies. Great weather, cheap housing, laid back.

Austin - Facebook, Google, etc have offices there now. Growing area with many startups.

Boulder/Denver/Ft Collins - Many Californians move here eventually. Much cheaper to own a home and great weather and place to live.

Raleigh - Heard it's a growing area and great place to live.

Atlanta - Good weather, low cost living. I really enjoyed Atlanta during my visits there.

Then there is Boston, NYC, Washington which are obviously huge markets and amazing cities.

Did I miss anything? Perhaps my perceptions are off.
Not sure how you feel about Los Angeles, but there is quite a large tech scene here as well. It appears to be mostly web (PHP / C#) and Android / Obj-C, but there are a ton of cool things being done if you search around a bit. Tons and tons of meetups as well.

Personally, Silicon Valley sounds like a horrible place to be, but I guess I read too much of some other site I don't feel like mentioning. Sounds too high-pressure and the divide between the haves and have-nots sounds too slippery for me, and downtown LA has entire families living on the street.

I'm also thinking of heading out of this town. Been pondering it for a few years and I'm considering Austin, but I don't feel like taking the leap quite yet.

The 30c3 talk convinced me it's good enough and the people working on it are sufficiently trustworthy.

I'm not convinced it is controlled by the US government. Interestingly it is used by quite a few government agencies and obviously NSA/FBI have run nodes for monitoring purposes etc.
I don't fully understand the technology yet but AFAIK NSA just running a massive percentage of all nodes would provide a somewhat interesting situation (but it seems that this can be handled)

Edit: keeping everything Tor up to date is very important though. Mozilla is somewhat notorious for being late and has actually been used as an attack vector by certain agancies as a result (i.e. Tor+Firefox=not exactly secure)

4k monitor for only 699$ from Dell, guess it's time to actually get a graphics card then. Anything that can handle 2x that?

I wouldn't think about touching it until they list its specs. I'm guessing since they did not list the specs then it'll be capped to 30hz. Most 4k displays up until now run at 30hz which is atrocious.

Wouldn't they want to build hype around it being able to do 60hz at 4k and 120hz at 1080p if it had the capability of doing so?

I'm kind of curious how much a video card with DP 1.20 will cost too. I just did a quick search on newegg, it doesn't have a facet for DP 1.20 specifically. Most of the cards with DP cannot even support 4k, so those must be 1.0.

In the end they gave me my previous salary (mostly because it was a pretty good deal for them even at that rate).
Yeah, I don't think anyone was incented to cut my salary and I'm sure I provide plenty of value at my current rate. I imagine the bigger issue is I'm a member of a union so there really probably is nothing they could do between approving the move and letting me go.

This can be very demoralizing for the whole team. I can't back this up rigorously but I'm sure someone who doesn't pull their weight brings down the productivity of the whole team on some subconscious level.

I'm not a monitor expert but according to the comments, that isn't exactly "4k".

Yea, thanks. I need to learn more about "Inspect element" and just web stuff in general.

And it does look like, from what little experience I have, that they used a version of bootstrap.

It's close enough and the price point is way lower than anything similar I'm aware of.

It's $499 and at some point was $399. The problem is it only runs at 30hz so it's effectively useless to do anything. It's been around for 6 months at this price or lower.

Yeah I def assumed 60Hz for the Dell if it's just 30 then meh indeed. I'm somewhat tempted to get one of these TVs though, 30Hz seems fine for me, I don't game at all and do you really need >30 for browsing, word processing, programming etc.
