What I was trying to show is that bootstrap-responsive.css says you should have a minimum left/right padding of 20px where your screen shot shows no left padding at all.
wtf, i dont see those paddings when i press F12, maybe bootstrap-responsive.css isn't getting loaded?

You should look at the sites listed on http://mediaqueri.es/ at different browser widths and compare with the screen shots to see if they look the same. Some of the sites listed are built with bootstrap and some aren't.

All of the sites listed on the first page look exactly the same as the screen shots for me.
first two worked fine, the third one failed with the horizontal scroll test

Looking again, it only shows up when the body tag is selected and the browser with is 767px or less.

When the browser is wider than 767px and less than 979px, the span12 class (which contains everything in the body) has a fixed width of 724px with auto margins creating left/right margins of 22px - 127px.

The same basic thing happens for larger widths.

I'm thinking of going native or dual boot with linux. Anyone have experience doing a native install on Chromebook? If so, how did it go? I'm thinking it'd be pretty cool to drop the $200 and install Arch on it.

Reason: Running on VirtualBox is not satisfying or productive. I like the notion of toggling machines, but it's really hard and time-consuming to do anything more than run C programs on it. Even the internet is generally slow. Running 2g Ram isn't really cutting it.

If someone knows how to make the VM act like a real machine, I'm certainly open to suggestions.

I was wondering if Bootstrap felt more rigid than Foundation or if that is an illusion. I guess the showcases can help determine that one.

fwiw, Foundation handles page zoom with no horizontal scrollbar

also Foundation sites definitely seem to have less of the "Bootstrap" look

I'm happy using ubuntu on a virtualbox, but I use the server version and only interact with it through putty.

I also make sure to give it 3 gigs of ram, 2-3 cpus and turn on VT-x for maximum speed. I've never had internet connection problems. I put two adapters on my virtualbox, one host-only and one natted.

Just increased the RAM and CPU. Unfortunately, I broke the machine in doing so... now I have to reinstall the whole thing. Didn't lose anything important at least.

Debating on doing dual boot or VM now. The problem was basically trying to run the JVM and I'm sort of concerned it'll end up being an issue even if I accelerate the VM anyways. Do you run JVM on your VM?

Foundation also has some nice customizable templates that help design newbs like me. I'm playing with their "feed" template now. I don't think I'll go back to bootstrap anytime soon, just so sick of the look.

It only took 13 months, but I finally have enough points to upvote posts on stackoverflow.

I should really contribute more often, given all the help I've received off there.

Someday I'll answer a question on SO... for now the one time I got to contribute to someone's question here will do.

So I had a "phone screening" with a company with "no set vacation time, take what you need! ". What does that mean in plain terms?

Probably a flexible vacation schedule with a certain number of paid days of vacation

it means exactly what it sounds like: you take as much vacation as you want, when you want it. they'll expect you to schedule it like a grown-up while continuing to be productive and satisfying your work commitments.

I know a hot "start up" in Boston that has that policy. Nobody takes vacation.

I'd much rather have a place that says 4 weeks or something than "as much as you need" because it's just a bit of a prisoner's dilemma.

Last company I worked at had an "unlimited vacation policy". The theory typically behind the policy is eliminating all of the accounting/HR/accrued time if you quit/ etc. that can actually cost a significant amount of $ in terms of company-wide management (especially if you are at a fast growing company) and employees will generally not abuse it.

Just because you have "unlimited vacation" and you ask for some time off, it does not mean you are 100% getting it because it is up to your manager's discretion. Also, pretty sure statistically employees take less time off with "unlimited vacation" than the typical 3-4 weeks vacation, 1 week personal/sick, 9-12 holidays.

I'm so up and down with S.O. It's not like I never learned anything, but it sort of gets one my nerves at times:

Could you please accept {user's} answer if it works for you?
I've so much karma-hoaring on that site. I've seen people straight-up say:

Quote:
I know this had an answer accepted already, but...
And essentially refuse to offer any extra answer or insight. The above is an actual answer and it was comment-length.

Perhaps it's because I am mostly trolling around the Clojure section. It's a far cry from Python or JavaScript where you can give a totally incorrect answer and still get 75 upvotes.

I wish they'd offer higher scores for answering and asking questions about rarer languages. The q's on Clojure tend to be highly esoteric, the "simple" questions get ridiculed, and god have mercy on your soul if you ask about doing anything with mutability because you'll get asked why you aren't considering parallelism.

Not to be a nit but a prisoner's dilemma can be solved if there's communication which I'd assume exists in the workplace :P

I feel like my true appreciation for stack overflow is the memory of just how ****ing ****ty everything before it was.

In a vacuum I think its pretty good. But when I think about just how much better it is than all the old alternatives - its a wonder of the modern world.

It depends entirely on the culture at that particular company. For some companies with this policy, taking any vacation is looked down upon and it will hurt how you're perceived by others in the company. At others, it's actually encouraged to take vacation especially after you've been grinding really hard on a project for a while.

It's definitely something you want to find out during the interview if vacation time is important to you. I would probably be blunt and ask "How much vacation does a developer here typically take in a year?" If employees actually take vacation then people in the interview will probably smile and answer truthfully because they are proud that the company lets them take vacation freely. If they don't take vacation, it could get awkward for a few moments and they'll probably just repeat the company line of "as much as you need".

If you're worried that asking might affect your chances of getting the job then wait to ask until after you have an offer.

You could always ask the interviewer how much vacation they took.

I kind of like this.

I've always been very clear that vacation and general work/life balance is important to me. I'd probably bring this up in the conversation too. It'll probably turn off anyone I don't want to work for.
