Yes! Germany should be DQ'd from the World Cup, to be replaced by England so that they can get destroyed by Argentina.

So I guess Germany has weird immigration laws where you don't automatically get citizenship by being born there and never having left the country because your parents are, say Turkish?

Yeah I call bs too. No way DFB messed this up. They put in some work like 2 years back or something to get him to play for Germany and not Turkey, it wasn't naturally for Özil to do that.

"Children born in Germany to foreign parents may acquire German nationality if certain conditions are met. They must however decide between the ages of 18 and 23 whether to retain their German nationality or the nationality of their parents."

i think playing for germany means he wants to retain his german nationality.

Yes Germany has weird immigration laws where you don't instantly get citizenship if you are born in a plane flying over the country.

well now they do. since february 2nd 1990 if you are born in germany you are a citizen, before that though, you have to be naturalized.

I probably was unclear, we were told in English class that you can get American citizenship if you are born in a plane flying over the USA.

"It's a pity that Ozil has chosen the wrong passport," Hiddink said. "He is a modern footballer I could use in my team." Actual quote. I think something may have been lost in translation.

Sounds like it. He has lived in Germany all his life.

Can Germans, like the dutch, not have dual citizenship? If you are born and live in Germany but have Turkish parents you can't have both a German and Turkish pasport?

Kuzmanovic and Rakitic are both Swiss natives, played in all the Swiss youngsters selections and then decided to play for Serbia and Croatia respectively rather than Switzerland when they had to pick in which national team they wanted to play since they have the double passport.

well, if you were born after 1990 you can. The only way to have dual german citizenship is to be born with it ie a german mother and american father would give dual citizenship. If you want to become naturalized you have to give up your other citizenships though.

Related, i was thinking about moving to germany, but i would have to give up my US citzenship, but my gf who was born in the US in 1990 would not have to give up her US citizenship because she has EU "citizenship" because her parents are from poland and she has polish citizenship.

not quite that easy. gotta prove at age of 23 or so that you do not hold (or have acquired) any other citizenship.

= It got public that he requested to get released from his Turkish nationality in November 2007. Before this, he had a Turkish and a German passport.

Thanks to our conservative party we have some ****ed up laws that make it really hard to have a dual citizenship. Children of immigrants have to decide which nationality they want to keep between the age of 18 and 23.

Well, that has nothing to do with the dual citizenship, it's because you dont serve your country, you basically renounced your German citizenship.

You could have a German and Austrian passport if you wanted to, you choose not to.

There are dual citizenship treaties between countries. So you can have 2 citizenships, it just depends on the country you originally come from/you want to become a citizen of.

If you're born in the US or any territories, including **** like the Panama Canal zone when we owned it, then you are a US Citizen. 14th amendment of the Constitution ftw.

In the quarters I'll be pulling for:

Netherlands
Ghana
Germany
Paraguay

Overall interest is in hoping a team that has never won before wins, but if it is going to be a team that has won before, I'll go with Germany.

this isn't true FWIW, my best friend in HS had a German dad and a Canadian mom and she had dual German/Canadian citizenship.
