[QUOTE=JtotheF;19831364]maybe i'm interpreting fifa's "laws of the game" wrong here...

A direct free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player commits any
of the following seven offences in a manner considered by the referee to be
careless, reckless or using excessive force
:
• kicks or attempts to kick an opponent
• trips or attempts to trip an opponent
• jumps at an opponent
• charges an opponent
• strikes or attempts to strike an opponent
• pushes an opponent
• tackles an opponent[/QUOTE

i don't think it was any of these...and the pic directly above seems to decisively prove this...am i the only one here who's not drunk or high?

Incidental contact, no pass interference imo

running across the back of a guy while he's running is at best careless.

As I said, to me it looks more like an accidental "trip", as he never looks at torres, so I wouldn't have given a foul here. Still, he trips him 100% and in the heat of the game, the ref might not have seen the chile player looking in a different direction.

i wanted to call "incidental contact" myself, but the words aren't even expressed in fifa's laws of the game and in fact, what i copy/pasted is that is written about such events...

you dont think running closely behind someone and clipping their leg is careless? if you did that on an underground station, it would be careless, and you'd get a smack in the yap for your troubles

which is why people are frustrated obv - it's guilt before proven innocence...reminds me of the nfl in that it's always the second guy that throws a punch that gets penalized, never the first (if the ref never saw it)...then again, the penalty in the nfl is never to take a man off the field, which is why the refs/fifa need to take greater care...

I doubt the chilean suffers from tunnel vision.

ONLY if it is the intent...otherwise running behind someone (in addition to running in front of or aside them) is something that is likely to happen in this sport...you do know that, right?

it's not recklesss, dangerous or excessive.

i assume the guy wouldn't have been booked for that if he shouldn't have been booked for the foul committed a few minutes earlier but was left off the hook.

don't quite get the ongoing arguing about that call, either.

My team of the round:

GK: Benaglio (SWI)
DF: Coentrao (POR)
DF: Fucile (URU)
DF: Lahm (GER)
DF: Maicon (BRA)
MF: Honda (JPN)
MF: Ozil (GER)
MF: Riveros (PAR)
MF: Alonso (SPA)
FW: Messi (ARG)
FW: Forlan (URU)

Some pretty tough omissions that have big arguments for inclusion.
Van Bommel should be in there imo. Clearly Hollands best player and the real motm against Denmark and Japan. Hard to take one out tho

you have spain and brazil, i doubt there is a possible draft that makes another team favourite if one side contains those two teams, and with holland/germany in the draft as well, you are a massive fav.

We coinflipped for first pick (I won if odd # goals between the later matches today, he wins if even # of goals), then just went back and forth.

Turns out I could have gotten Uruguay instead of the US in retrospect, but I got mad respect for WIM

Given that Torres is also not looking where he's going, I'm going to say that sometimes, running while looking at the ball is considered a normal part of the game
