So like a month ago me and my 2 roommates went out to this new brew pub in suburbia to meet with a friend who just had a baby. He doesn't get out much so we drove like 30 min away from all the DC area bars to near where he lives. The place just opened in September and he said it was awesome etc.

Anyway the place is pretty legit, it's huge and they had really good beer and a stupid cheap happy hour - $3 drafts and $2 snack apps. The place is empty so we socialize with the bartenders and a regular who is there, and we order a few rounds and one of each of the three snack apps to try. I put down my card to start the tab, and she gives me the card right back after putting it on the tab.

We decide to move out to this patio area where they have live music, but we like the inside bartender so we decide to keep my tab open. Before we move outside my friend with the baby pays his portion of the tab. The other 3 of us order our 3rd beer each and head outside. It's a nice evening so we stay out there. It's a one man band and he is ok but they have some board games like jenga and sorry! So we play that.

We decide to order some real food so we get 3 things to share, an order of nachos, lamb meatballs and a Flatbread. I go inside to order and also get another round of beers, this one not on the happy hour. We stay outside and our friend with the baby is joined by his wife and her parents and we just chill with them. It's casual night not getting trashed.

So the parents leave and before they do the father in law tells our friend with the baby that he paid our tab. Father in law does this stealthily without us knowing this, but friend with baby let's us know so we don't double pay. We are like oh wow that's awesome and wasn't necessary make sure you thank him etc. We leave right from outside to parking lot never going back inside.



Fast forward to today I am just looking through my card history and I see a charge for $193 from the bar from that day. I'm like dafuq is this? So I call friend with baby and he talks to father in law and is like Yeah father in law said he paid like $70 to cover his tab and ours and I'm like Uh no way $70 covered all of our food (they ordered food too) and their drinks he def just paid for himself. Was an honest mistake or he paid somebody else's tab idk.

So I'm doing the math and I figure it works out roughly like this:
9x $3 hh beers = $27
3x $2 hh snacks = $6
3x app/entree ~$12 each = $36
3x non hh beers ~$6 each = $18

Total + tax = ~$93 give or take


Basically, looks my tab never got closed and because I never closed out they straight up added $100 bucks. Now I liked the bar and service and the food so would have left a $20-30 tip so I got over charged like $70 bucks. I know some places it is standard to add a 20% gratuity to non-closed tabs but I think I got screwed over.

So the question is this: what's my play now? My roommates and friend with baby say I should call bar and inquire/complain. I'm like meh on it because it's a month later and seems kinda petty at this point and don't want to be a bitch over like $70 bucks. It is a place we really liked and would visit again but at the same time it's a place that's out of the way so not somewhere we would frequent. Roommates say they'll prob give me a gift card or something to compensate but I don't wanna cost anyone their job either or get someone in trouble when it was technically my fault (though I of course intended to pay). I also don't feel like having to drive there to get a gift card if that's what they do offer.

What say you fackers?

k I read it twice and I'm not totally sure I fully understand the nuance here, but it seems to me like father in law told you your tab was done when it was not, thus you didn't go check on it, thus he cost you whatever the penalty is

so that's his fault

that said, like, talk about poor form to come after him for some help over, as you said, like $70

maybe just see if your boys will chip in a little on the extra or, even better, they can buy an extra beer or two next time you guys go out and make it a little more even between you three

would also call the bar and be like "hey look, I didn't even leave my card, the tab was only open because the guy who paid some told me it was closed, it's unfair to be hitting me for a penalty fee on a tab that I thought was closed and it's a real good reason for none of us to ever come back, would appreciate a little help here"

you might be surprised, only ask your bros to hit you for a beer or two down the line if that doesn't work

if they give you a gift card, the classy move would be to use it for a few rounds and tip the cool bartender or manager the remainder of the card

situation sucks but it's not worth much hassle

Yeah, didn't even think about asking roommates for anything, have no problem covering it. They just made it seem like I was an idiot for not calling the bar to complain. No way would I go after the father in law for the money.

make an effort to reclaim the over charge, if its not just a mistake, by calling. could be a half hour call or less for 70. if it works out as a gift card just tell baby to pick up the ~70 and owe you 20 he and wife prob love that. and no one will be fired for you calling in, they likely deal w worse daily

Actually lived there for 5 years before moving to Chicago 18 months ago. Plan on moving back after the New Year as well. Gotta love San Diego

Yea my GF actually from there so we go back quite often. Been to the ballast point in little italy a few times. I think I am flying out wednesday and staying with NLSoldier until my hotel is ready on Friday

I think the optimal play is to move to Chicago, start dating someone who lives in Chicago whose birthday is next weekend, turn down a free trip to SD so she can celebrate with friends locally, then make sure to find some random church that has someone involved with the movie Chiraq delivering a sermon that same weekend. What fun!

Yeah, a 3-sentence summary would have sufficed.

No chance that bar added a $100 just because fee on a left card. That is theft and a serious risk to their reputation for very little money. My bet is FIL paid less and they at most added a 20% tip, which should be advertised as the policy. Their point of sale may have a reference. Not that I would call a month later.

I don't think unscrupulous employee is too a big dog to FIL.
