Societal positives: ??? - Washed up singers get to perform a couple songs on TV? What else....

Negatives: Monumental waste of energy, drunken debauchery, rape, fisticuffs, incest, people cheating on their lover, people fighting, crying... massive cleanup efforts for the city. I won't hate on NYE like some others, but this is a definitely a reason to not like it as much. Plenty of people who rarely go out go out on NYE, and this is usually a net negative because most of these people are older/married. Then you get some ridiculous prices for places just because it's NYE.

But if done right, NYE can definitely be an elite night. Also, if you don't have anything planned, it's a good night to go to the casino.

Look I used to love NYE when I was younger. I have no problem saying I'm old and just don't care for it anymore.

But anyone who seriously disputes my "net negative" comment should really try to prove that it's a net-positive event for humankind. Or neutral. I honestly don't see how that's possible.

This isn't to say I don't enjoy things that are net-negative. Just not NYE.

What does proving its a net positive even mean? Every holiday is tons of consumerism and waste. None besides maybe Arbor Day are net positives.
