Round 6, Pick #62:

I need a leader that isn't afraid to ruffle a few feathers while he gets **** done. And by get **** done I mean kill ~70 million of his own citizens in 27 years. Good for around 2.7 milly per year

Spoiler:

Quote:
Critics and historians have characterized him as a dictator who oversaw systematic human rights abuses, and whose rule is estimated to have contributed to the deaths of 40–70 million people through starvation, forced labor and executions, ranking his tenure as the top incidence of democide in human history.
Quote:
Along with land reform, during which significant numbers of landlords and well-to-do peasants were beaten to death at mass meetings organised by the Communist Party as land was taken from them and given to poorer peasants, there was also the Campaign to Suppress Counter-revolutionaries, which involved public executions targeting mainly former Kuomintang officials, businessmen accused of "disturbing" the market, former employees of Western companies and intellectuals whose loyalty was suspect. The U.S. State department in 1976 estimated that there may have been a million killed in the land reform, and 800,000 killed in the counter-revolutionary campaign.
Quote:
Mao himself claimed that a total of 700,000 people were killed in attacks on "counter-revolutionaries" during the years 1950–52. However, because there was a policy to select "at least one landlord, and usually several, in virtually every village for public execution", the number of deaths range between 2 million and 5 million. In addition, at least 1.5 million people, perhaps as many as 4 to 6 million, were sent to "reform through labor" camps where many perished. Mao played a personal role in organizing the mass repressions and established a system of execution quotas, which were often exceeded. He defended these killings as necessary for the securing of power.

Quote:
In Shanghai, suicide by jumping from tall buildings became so commonplace that residents avoided walking on the pavement near skyscrapers for fear that people committing suicide might land on them. Some biographers have pointed out that driving those perceived as enemies to suicide was a common tactic during the Mao-era.
Quote:
Programs pursued during this time include the Hundred Flowers Campaign, in which Mao indicated his supposed willingness to consider different opinions about how China should be governed. Given the freedom to express themselves, liberal and intellectual Chinese began opposing the Communist Party and questioning its leadership. This was initially tolerated and encouraged. After a few months, Mao's government reversed its policy and persecuted those, totaling perhaps 500,000, who criticized, as well as those who were merely alleged to have criticized, the party in what is called the Anti-Rightist Movement. Authors such as Jung Chang have alleged that the Hundred Flowers Campaign was merely a ruse to root out "dangerous" thinking.
Quote:
Censuses were carried out in China in 1953, 1964 and 1982. The first attempt to analyse this data to estimate the number of famine deaths was carried out by American demographer Dr. Judith Banister and published in 1984. Given the lengthy gaps between the censuses and doubts over the reliability of the data, an accurate figure is difficult to ascertain. Nevertheless, Banister concluded that the official data implied that around 15 million excess deaths incurred in China during 1958–61, and that based on her modelling of Chinese demographics during the period and taking account of assumed under-reporting during the famine years, the figure was around 30 million. The official statistic is 20 million deaths, as given by Hu Yaobang
I can't wait until Mao introduces "The Second Great Leap Forward" to the people of Vatican City, in which he explains how they will only be allowed to eat Golden Poison Dart Frogs.

Country - Vatican City
Vehicle - Screw propelled thing
Animal - Golden Poison Dart Frog
Weapon - Cyclosarin
Disease/Bacteria - Necrotizing fasciitis
Leader - Mao Zedong

Since y'all are too silly to understand the value of Absinthe:

Alcohol by volume: 45–74% ABV, which is higher than almost all spirits we drink today, approaching the levels of Everclear on the upper end. Regardless of the wormwood, my citizens should be nicely drunk.

Scientific research on the effects of wormwood (particularly thujone) are sparse.

A Review of its Pharmaceutical, Pharmacological and Clinical Properties. Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. 2005 Mar;2(1):69–78:

"Thujone is reported to be toxic to brain, kidney and liver cells and could cause convulsions if used in too high a dose. Side-effects from the essential oil of this plant include anxiety and sleeplessness, which confirms the central nervous system effects of thujone."

Wormwood is classified as an unsafe herb by the FDA. The safety of wormwood is poorly documented. Convulsions, dermatitis (skin inflammation), and renal failure have been documented.

I hope that my citizens are forced to drink this, seeing that water makes up about ~0% of Namibia's land area.

Namibia

Spoiler:

Spoiler:

Spoiler:

It is a beautiful country, I am not being facetious. Unfortunately, it was not blessed with much water or much arable land. All the geographic regions of Namibia consist of abiotic conditions (non living), with sparse pockets of life. No wonder Namibia is the least dense country in the world.

You do get a wet pocket to the north east, with rains and deltas formed from water flow from its northern border country. Due to heavy rainfalls, this area is more of a swamp land, with sparse villages:

Spoiler:

Here is a "village" consisting of about ~13 buildings, surrounded by flooded grasslands.

Arable land accounts for only 1% of Namibia. It is a country for tough people. It's coastline is notorious for being unfriendly. Cold winds, heavy fog, and a stretch known as the Skeleton Coast. The Skeleton Coast will remind my citizens that there is no escape from this hell. My citizens will some day lay alongside the shipwrecks and bones of the Skeleton Coast.

See what I mean?

While Hitler/Stalin/Pol Pot are pretty much universally reviled in their countries, you still find Chinese that support Mao.

Mass killings are not usually associated with Mao and the Great Leap Forward, and China continues to benefit from a more favourable comparison with Cambodia or the Soviet Union. But as fresh and abundant archival evidence shows, coercion, terror and systematic violence were the foundation of the Great Leap, and between 1958 to 1962, by a rough approximation, some 6 to 8 per cent of those who died were tortured to death or summarily killed—amounting to at least 3 million victims.

Mao is a virtual lock to kill a significant portion of your society while mobilizing the rest of them into tearing up the buildings you don't need to create growing areas, sustainable agriculture, rule of "law" and highly efficient methods of political control.

So basically you have accelerated murder but also progress toward sustainability and technological development.

Undraftable imo.

His stench alone will force a bunch of people to commit suicide.

Chiang was a big pussy compared to Mao.
