Papelbon hasn't pitched in three days, there's only 1 more game before the ASB, and Timlin is coming in. Using him for 1.1 innings here is not a waste.

It's a waste in the sense that if they don't score for a while then do score a run, who closes?

On the road it's harder ot use your closer in a tie game.

At home you can do it because as soon as you score a run the games over and you don't need a closer. but i know what you're all saying, it's better to use your best rather lose the game without him getting off the pine. But still on the road its tough.

Who has a better chance of keeping the score as it is? If Timlin gives up a run here the game is over. Since getting outs is the goal currently so your team can bat, why use the lesser pitcher? Also, BOS can score more than 1 run and allow for a lesser pitcher to 'close' the rest of the game. Paps highest value is in the current situation where giving up any runs is 100% chance of losing the game.

Apparently tito is also a gimmick account because he's doing what I'm saying. but he's probably "old" school.

This was already discussed ad nauseam in the Yankees thread to which I linked.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure there have been situations before where Tito has used Papelbon on the road in a tie game in the 9th/10th/11th.

You mean you don't see the difference between using him in a home game vs an away game when it's tied in extra innings?

The only reason I can imagine that Francona hasn't brought him out is because boston has an 11 game lead in the division, and wants him to get a lot of rest with the ASB coming up. That is the only thing I can imagine, not saying it is correct.

Also, the fallacy of authority isn't very convincing. If I said 'well francona batted a rookie, he is a coach, so i must be right that batting the rookie was the correct thing to do" that doesn't make it the right thing to do.

?

the question is if you should be using Pap in a tie game on the road, not whether it's better/worse/equal than doing it at home. that's barely relevant.

how do people choose to lose the game with their best pitcher on the bench? it's not variance, it's poor decisions. variance would be putting their best pitcher out there and still losing.

No seriously guys, click on this link

and replace "Rivera" with "Papelbon" and "Proctor" with "Timlin".

I'm not saying that Red Sox fans are dumber than Yankees fans (not too many people here are saying that), but there is a HUGE difference between Timlin and Proctor in this situation.

Well, back in the 10th the comparison would have been between Proctor and (a kind of gassed) Okajima.

I think a number of regulars in this thread pop in the Yankee thread on occasion, so I just wanted to point out the argument there.

Explain to me why pitching with a lead has more pressure than pitching in a tie game where if you let up 1 run you lose game over.
