Why are you bringing up Washington if we're talking about 07-08? They weren't that good.

CORSI, Zone Start, QUALCOMP, and QUALTEAM.

Corsi measures the differential between attempted shots FOR and attempted shots AGAINST. Since there's been found very little year to year correlation in shooting percentage FOR or shooting percentage AGAINST, I feel pretty safe in saying that, in general, a player who's on ice for more shots for than more shots against is contributing positively to the team. We'll be using Relative Corsi, which measures players in comparison to their teammates.

Zone Start measures how often a player starts a shift in the offensive zone versus the defensive zone. This has a pretty big effect on Corsi and our overall perception of their play - players who get a lot of o-zone starts are thought to be better defensemen than guys who get a lot of d-zone starts by the eye test because we usually don't check who's put out before each shift.

QUALCOMP and QUALTEAM are more complicated but they measure the quality of the opposing players and the quality of the other 4 players out on the ice when this particular player is on the ice, respectively.

So let's look at Kaberle's rank among Leaf defenders in these categories among D w/ more than 30 games so far this year, 40 games previous two:

2010-11 (out of 6): 1st in CORSI REL, 1st in ZS%, 6th in QUALCOMP, 1st in QUALTEAM
2009-10 (out of 6): 1st in CORSI REL, 1st in ZS%, 4th in QUALCOMP, 2nd in QUALTEAM
2008-09 (out of 6): 1st in CORSI REL, 1st in ZS%, 5th in QUALCOMP, 5th in QUALTEAM

So okay, he's doing the best in Corsi. But he's also getting the best ice time - not only has he gotten lots of offensive zone faceoffs (lots more than his Leaf teammates), he's never faced even average competition. His QUALTEAM for the last two years means that he's got, in general, the best Leafs' forwards out there with him.

He's being sheltered and he's doing pretty good with that shelter. But certainly not exceptional - and this is now, what about 2 years from now? These numbers are very similar to Wade Redden, who was quickly taken out of shelter and exposed for the world to see. I think Redden and Kaberle are similar defenders.
Hey appreciate the work. Can you recommend some sites to view the stats in a meaningful way? I need to see who is ranking high in these stats to get a good feel of what they are measuring.

My first reaction to Kaberle/Redden is that every team then somehow could and would shelter your best puck moving dman if even weak teams like the Leafs do/can. I would assume someone like Rafalski would be the same except he plays on a good team. Redden situation has more to do with Redden imo. Weird dude.

Anyway gotta go. More on this later. thx again

From the article:
Quote:
He also dismissed fears the building could wind up suffering a bleak fate if, like older arenas in Hamilton and Kansas City, it fails to land an NHL tenant.
Labeaume said this building would "not become a white elephant" because, as a multi-purpose facility, it would attract more non-hockey events to Quebec City.
In other words, gambooooooooooooool

Er, I got 08 and 09 mixed up. You can probably throw PIT in there too

Detroit was the GOAT territorial team that year. They had a ES tied Fenwick ratio of 60% which is ridiculous. I suppose Lundqvist > Osgood and this mystery good player would help tho.

This is all a moot point anyway, as the moral of the story is lol Rangers, lol Sather, lol Jes.sima.n

These arenas aren't just used for hockey. Obviously it becomes used for concerts and always could be used for an NBA team as well.

This Sabres/Panthers game is putting me to sleep. 5 minutes into the 2nd and I don't think there has been a single quality scoring chance

If you built it, will they come? That's what the city of Kansas City is asking about its less than two-year-old arena, which sits without a functioning professional sports team to call its own. Is that where the Islanders come in? "We're not looking to take anybody's team," said Paul McGannon, head of NHL21, a local group trying to bring a team to Kansas City.
oh ok, well that's cool.

Quote:
"But if for whatever reason things don't work out on the Island, we would gladly accept a four-time Stanley Cup champion."
LOL, well ok then!

Quote:
The only professional sports team that plays there is the Arena Football League's Kansas City Brigade — and that league recently canceled its upcoming season because of the economy.
this could be YOU, Quebec City!

Quote:
The exhibition game between the Islanders and Los Angeles Kings that was announced Thursday will be the second in arena history. Los Angeles played the St. Louis Blues in front of 11,603 fans last Sept. 22
ouch!

Quote:
The inclusion of the Kings in both games is no surprise because the Sprint Center is managed by international sports conglomerate Anschutz Entertainment Group; its CEO, Tim Leiweke, is the president of the Kings and a powerful member of the NHL's Board of Governors. The former Kansas City resident has been a longtime proponent of bringing the NHL to Kansas City. Kansas Citians remember that Leiweke promised in 2004, when the arena project was approved, to have a major-league team "playing here the day you open your doors." Leiweke could not be reached for comment.
ya don't say? lol

Quote:
The glittering arena has six NHL-ready locker rooms, but for now has to accept being mostly a concert and entertainment venue. Garth Brooks did nine sold-out nights in 2008; Britney Spears brings her "Circus" tour there April 2. The NCAA men's basketball tournament will hold first- and second-round action at the Sprint Center in March. Other than that, the only other scheduled sporting event is professional bull riding.
more ouchiness!

Quote:
The city has failed in recent years to lure the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators. The Penguins seriously flirted before an agreement was reached to build a new arena. The Predators got a new lease and new ownership group. "We're tired of being the bridesmaids," McGannon said. "We're serious." It's unclear if the NHL truly wants to tap into this market or is just using the empty new arena as a bargaining ploy to stare down recalcitrant municipalities. And it's unclear if this market is really drooling over the NHL...Said Kansas City Star sports editor Holly Lawton, "I think it's very safe to say there has not been a groundswell of excitement in bringing a Hockey team here yet."
yeah, that's kind of a sad story. i really hope if Quebec builds this thing, they have a some sort of backroom deal done to move a team there so the same thing doesn't happen again. the building would end of really the city if they're only hosting QMJHL games and a few concerts here and there. maybe Celine Dion could move her show from Vegas and play 300 nights per year, lol.

but at least QC does have a groundswell of support working in their favour, as well as the backing of all levels of government. so they seem like possibly a better situation for a team to move.

oh yeah, and in case anyone missed it (wasn't mentioned itt that i saw), but Hamhuis is probably out for a while again, for the Canucks. kind of a crappy play, he gets hit in the numbers by Getzlaf as he turns to reverse the puck. plus he looked to jump a bit on it, so charging or boarding? nope, no call again, whatever. apparently the league looked at it for a while today, but also decided to take no action. did they even look at the Michalek on Ballard play from the game before? probably not.

so if i had to guess it's a concussion, the way his head his the glass and how he fell to the ice looking unconscious. team hasn't said anything yet, which these days seems to mean they're waiting to see if they can call it something other than a concussion. and like i said the other day, pretty standard for the Canucks D-men to start falling one by one as we head towards the playoffs, happens every year. and funny considering a guy they signed partly because of how durable he has been over his career has suffered two injuries in 47 games (foot, and now head). he'll likely join Edler and Ballard, and recent replacement callup Sweatt, on the "out for a while" list. Rome and Alberts just came back from injuries, and Salo should be back soon. Canucks D is like Pittsburgh forwards, or something.

Some not so great officiating in the Pens game tonight. I guess that high stick on Stoll was hard to pick up, but Letang had a really obvious interference on Smyth near the end of regulation that they ignored. I don't mind letting things go sometimes, but you can't not make blatantly obvious calls just because you don't want to give a powerplay late in a tie game.

Not that I'm complaining though, we need to stockpile all of the points we can get.
