doms old. forgive him

edit: seriously tho Russell didn't even play his rookie season really, kinda forgot that. But Dom, his second season he played 15 games and threw for a very suspect 198 ypg, 13tds and 8 picks (not a terrible ration and I'll forgive the lack of tds and yards a very very tiny bit as they didn't give rookies the reigns 10 years ago like they seem to today).

But no, no, no, no. Its a horrible comparison not only because of their stats but Russell was a terrible first pick by the known idiotic Raiders, while Watson excelled at a much higher level in college and for some reason got passed over by teams that were desperate for a QB and took far worse ones (pedigree as well as achievements).

Vick is a reasonable comparison, Cam did come out the game crushing too. Honestly, its really hard to compare QBs of today to even, hell, 5-7 years ago. The game is getting so pass happy the numbers are so bloated even guys who did excel their numbers look pretty shabby compared to what hes on pace for. Even if he slows down (he will, but maybe not a lot, he's going to go for 32-35 tds. Who cares if he throws 16 picks. add on 4,000 yards and thats a ****ing great rookie season.

double edit: how bout Matt Ryan? Reasonable comparison I think.

This would be my pick too - which is why I'm no where near close to predicting greatness for DW.

God damn, just looking at Cam's rookie season for comparison...I totally forgot how much he crushed, especially on the ground. 700+ yards and 14! tds. He also threw for 4k yards and 21 tds. Yea, 35 total tds...he did turn the ball over quite a bit (17 picks, 5 fumbles) but thats uhhh pretty tough to beat. Pretty unreal how they've completely cut off his ability to run as hes not a very good passer.

Sorry, I was thinking of Vince Young.

LOL wrong again Dom, Young pretty much sucked too. He was able to win because of a dominant run game and a pretty stout defense. His pocket passing game was always a joke, Watson can actually sit back and sling it.

You're still the best tho

LOL he was in the Pro bowl and was Rookie of the Year. And the fact that he ended up sucking is exactly my point.

Vince Young had a 51% completion percentage and threw more picks than touchdowns his rookie year. He was good at running though, and even with that being overwhelmingly the best part of his game Watson has a higher ypc

The fact that there's no team that was shown to be consistently better than other teams at drafting (lolBrowns are consistently worse but that's beside the point) shows that it's either impossibly complex or all the teams use the wrong methodology and proper ways of evaluating NFL talent haven't been invented yet.
Christian Hackenberg went two rounds higher than Dak Prescott

Teams doubted Deshaun Watson but gave up the farm for Jared Goff

Remember this when Josh Allen goes three rounds too high next draft

NFL teams like 6'4" guys who look pretty throwing a football (all the better if they "look like the kind of guy you want your daughter to marry," if you get my drift) and are shockingly unconcerned with ability to execute all the necessary duties of quarterback well and at game speed.

Also, a large (3/4 at least) portion of teams use one of two national scouting services for their evaluations (or did last I checked). If everyone is working from the same list, the mistakes made on that list are magnified.

Vick was an insane talent, are you predicting Watson's career will also be derailed by a dogfighting scandal?

He didn't really suck, but his coach hated him and I'm guessing that stunted his growth. (Just compare his numbers to Kerry Collins' on the same team, and then remember that Jeff Fisher, noted QB genius, looked for every excuse he could to play Collins over Young.)

Yeah still hard to believe how cancerous Jeff fisher was. Can’t rven imagine how many careers he ruined.

Either Cutler or Jeff Garcia are prob better comps for Watson

Cutler's first full year (his 2nd season):
3497yds, 20tds, 14ints, 205 rah yrds

bardy going late in the 6th round clearly shows that college qb evaluation is impossible and we shouldn't try

Brady did have the benefit of knowing all the defenses play calls the first 5-7 years of his career. That did benefit his growth as a qb.

Success=multiyear starter is probably not a great metric. Probably should use average number of starts per QB selected in each round

If I'm the GM of the Chiefs and Houston calls me up right now and offers Watson for Mahomes, I'm declining. As would Brett Veach IRL IMO. Mahomes>Watson.

If its just "black QBs are somewhat underrated" (Russ Wilson, Watson, Dak) well I imagine that will change soon if its between being slightly racist vs winning football games.

"Quincy Carter had a winning record as a starting QB in the NFL (18-16)."

I forgot this man. Brought chills back.

yep. Vick got suspended and went to jail right before his age 27 season. Realistically it was very close to his peak and if he could improve as a passer before his speed and athleticism failed him his next 3-4 years could have easily been his best and he possibly could have posted some of most impressive all around seasons ever for a QB with a slight uptick in passing.

He ran for over 1,000 yards on 123 carries the previous year and his long was 51 yards and he only had 2 TDs so it was just consistent big production and not buoyed by a few 80+ yard TDs.

Lol at this. If I'm the Houston GM and get offered Mahomes, Hunt, Reek, and any Chiefs defender of my choice for Watson I'm laughing and hanging up.

Vick didn't play as a rookie and stylistically isnt a great comparison. If you look at 2nd year first time starting QBs Daunte threw for 4k and lead the league w/ 33 passing TDs with 7 more on the ground. Statistically thats a good comparison. The QB that is reminding me of Daunte rn tho is Wentz.

Cam the best example of a rookie coming out the gates on fire.

Watching young ATL Vick was the best attraction in the league.

This is a good comparison though I think Watson is better. Garcia was a 29 year old rookie and also an inch shorter and 25 pounds lighter.
