In honor of Golden Tate's new deal.

man buffalo... if you're just going to torch $ on fire you could've kept byrd or sign someone who can actually play. Attention teams, you don't have to sign someone just to sign someone (see Packers).
Looking for someone to tell me this guy doesn't suck...like someone who isn't Williams' agent or family member or posts on a Bills message board.
Efforts unsuccessful so far.

Golden Tate is a really nice pickup for the Lions.. needed a #2 in the worst way

I think he'll do really well there. Going from a run-heavy offense to a pass-heavy offense, and one where there's a legitimately clearly superior receiver to draw attention away from him (best he ever had in Seattle was a healthy Sidney Rice since Harvin was barely in the mix last year), I can definitely see him running up career numbers.

He's going to get some nice 1 on 1 red zone coverage too. He should get a lot of good jump ball opportunities

So Seahawks are burning WRs they don't have and Rams are burning OL they don't have?

Tate deal: $31m over 5y, $13.25m gtd. good enough for a 4th rounder comp pick?

Comp picks aren't on a player by player basis. They're based on the amount/value of UFAs your team signs vs not.

" In addition to the 32 selections in each of the seven rounds, a total of 32 compensatory picks are awarded to teams that have lost more or better compensatory free agents than they signed in the previous year"

Losing Tate is balanced by signing Bennett for a more valuable contract (APY). You could sign a bunch of guys too but still get a comp pick if you lose a bunch of high value guys.

cowboys north

Quote:
1. Lost players that are cut or not tendered as RFAs and ERFAs do not qualify.

2. Lost players that were picked up during the season the year before do not qualify.

3. Signed players that are released before midseason do not qualify.

4. Players earning low minimum salaries do not qualify.

5. Each player signed cancels out one player lost.

6. The round of the pick awarded is primarily determined by the annual value of the contract signed. Signed players cancel out lost players with equal contracts, then lower contracts, before canceling out higher contracts.
so re-signing players (before free agency begins) cancels out the same way as singing a new player? odd.

edit: I dont think it does. Resigned players not listed similarly to new signings in this nfl.com article.

Does it matter when calculating this that Bennett re-signed before free agency hit?

No, it's not, because Bennett was their own free agent. It's a formula based on players lost vs. players gained, and contract size is a major factor in determining the value of the pick awarded.

Here's the best guide I've found to compensatory picks:

From what I quoted, Bennett will count as a signing and null out the loss of Tate. Though he had no opp to sign with another team, I would consider him a compensatory FA as it was still a signing & roster addition. Also, it's not like we are talking about a comp pick in this year anyways.

Right, I realize that it's not for this year. Still I'd like something to look forward to while we mostly get raided.

It's a huge gain for Detroit. Matt Stafford's college roommate was our #2 WR. That second WR across from Megatron is huge. Hopefully Tate does end up like TITUS YOUNG SR and Ryan Broyles.

bennett will not count as a signing for the reasons nath mentioned

even if he was re-signed after free agency began.

Eh I was wrong. However, we don't know what pick(s) the loss of Tate will command, since FA just started ldo. Comp picks obv are to make up for roster downturn and retaining Bennett is a net zero effect

i like tate, he's a really good return man too, but hes completely replaceable especially in a run heavy offense

also assuming harvin plays 8 games he is an immediately upgrade on tate anyways so if anything seattle still gets better... i'm sure they will draft a little depth though
