Pick 111

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktff3bZpux8

Spoiler:

Billy Corgan

Quote:
William Patrick "Billy" Corgan, Jr. (born March 17, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist and occasional poet who is, along with undrafted, the founding member of The Smashing Pumpkins. Corgan started playing shows around Chicago, Illinois with guitarist undrafted, and a drum machine in 1987. The project quickly gained steam with the addition of undrafted and undrafted. In three years, The Smashing Pumpkins had transformed themselves into a major label success. Strong album sales and large-scale tours propelled the band's increasing fame, while undrafted's drug problems escalated until he had to be fired. The Pumpkins continued as a three-piece until undrafted rejoined the band in 1999, and the band broke up in 2000. Corgan started a new band with undrafted right away, called Zwan, and after their demise he released a solo album and a collection of poetry before setting his sights on reforming the Smashing Pumpkins.
The new version of that band, consisting of Corgan, undrafted, and a revolving tour lineup, released an album in 2007 and followed it with extensive touring over the next year and a half. Undrafted left the Smashing Pumpkins in March 2009, while Corgan continued on with a new lineup, currently recording the album Teargarden by Kaleidyscope and touring. He maintains a strong grass-roots following and is known to have direct communication with his fans.

I grew up a huge Nirvana fan, but I'd have to say that Siamese Dream is the best album of that era. Every track is simply amazing, and I don't know if I can think of a better back-to back-to back set of songs than Soma, Geek U.S.A., and Mayonaise. He then followed that up with Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, which garnered a ton of critical acclaim and popularity featuring songs like "Tonight, Tonight", "1979","Bullet With Butterfly Wings", and "Zero."

Many of you know I've been big on frontmen who do the great majority of the songwriting in this draft, and Corgan continues that philosophy:

Quote:
The direction of the band is dominated by chief guitarist, lead vocalist, and principal songwriter Billy Corgan. Journalist Greg Kot wrote, "The music [of The Smashing Pumpkins] would not be what it is without his ambition and vision, and his famously fractured relationships with his family, friends, and bandmembers."[6] Melissa Auf der Maur commented upon news of the group's reunion, "Everyone knows Billy doesn't need too many people to make a Pumpkins record"

Studio so far:

Paul McCartney
Lou Reed
Bob Marley
Tom Petty
Sam Cooke
Morrissey
Billy Corgan

Jesus, I was getting ready to pick Billy.

Insanely sick pick for the 6th round. Biggest-selling band of the 90's to this day afaik.

Pav, Carey, Babyface, MJ, and Chuck D. Hmmm. Go for extreme vocal talent again imo. I mean, isn't Babyface pulling it all together anyway?

But, ldo curious to see who will make sense of the studio - will be a genius pick if they can pull if it off.

Finally - not finally. Probably a good pick, - i'm not a huge fan and the band never meant anything to me and bigger there than here, tbh, so unfortunately I'm a poor judge here.

I am, however, amazed that people in these bands are being picked before undrafted who was in what I always understood to be their direct antecessor.

[Shout at me, plz, ppl, if that's too explicit]

^Best SP song.

Nice pick. I'm not too familiar with Corgan but I really like the Smashing Pumpkins and the last quote in your writeup, if according to wiki, seems like he's a big part of that.

According to who you believe, Billy plays every instrument outside of the drums on just about every single Pumpkins album.

As big a control freak as he is, the man is a genius. I really can't reiterate how good I think that pick is at this point.

Really? Wow.

Smashing Pumpkins have a lot of songs I like, don't love any of their albums all the way through without skipping quite a few songs though. If they made Mellon Collie into one album and cut out the waste it would be one of the best albums of the 90s.

Just my personal opinion but....

Cobain > Corgan > Vedder > Cornell

That's basically what I'm going for, vocal talent. Not sure if Chuck D qualifies lol but I couldn't figure out why he hadn't been picked yet so I just took him.

I know who you're talking about, and he''ll be drafted soon I'm sure. I think the argument some people might make is that the first isn't always the best. Sometimes the proteges turn out better than the mentors.

You wouldn't have Kubrick without Abel Gance or Sergei Eisenstein, but Kubrick was better, etc.

Spoiler:

Jeffry Ross Hyman... AKA Joey Ramone

While The Stooges are often seen as the beginnings of punk, Joey Ramone was the first true punk icon. As the lead vocalist (and often songwriter) of The Ramones, Joey became an icon due to his legendary punk vocals and style. The Ramones adopted the no frills style of punk during a time where progressive rock and other such silliness ruled the music landscape. The only two modes the band generally knew were loud and fast, but their music is a testament to how even the simplest songs can be great.

While never a huge commercial success, The Ramones are considered one of the most influential bands of all time. Their early albums pretty much provided the framework that every punk band has followed since. Slate writer Douglas Wolk said that The Ramones were "easily the most influential group of the last 30 years." Even many bands in genres outside of punk are indebted to The Ramones and their minimalist take on rock and roll.

Blitzkrieg Bop
Sheena is a Punk Rocker
Rock 'N' Roll High School
Teenage Lobotomy

Rat Studios:
Kurt Cobain
David Bowie
David Byrne
Iggy Pop
Elvis Costello
Joey Ramone

No idea how credit was split among The Ramones, as a group they would go a lot earlier obv

They split a lot of songwriting credit, but I think Joey's vocals + frontman qualities make him the pick.

Maybe I'm getting too cute. Joey is definitely an icon. Personally, I would have gone another direction.

I <} the Ramones, but also they are a key band I think, really much more influential than The Stooges (who were always being resuscitated imo) and than the other NY bands who wre their contemporaries. This wasn't on my "list re Needle" but I think it's a good pick - only worry is as usual about how important the other band members were.

"undrafted, Joey, undrafted: good times" as undrafted sang

I mostly just think the singing + iconic frontman aspect is way harder to replace than the instrumentalists and even the songwriting. I could be way off though.
