I agree with Clark and KC about PJ/Ten.

I am pretty sure if that isn't your favorite PJ record, then your taste in rock music is really poor. Either that or your purposely trying to appear smug and snobbish.

Just looked up lady gaga's tour--she is booked until April 2011. Her tour is basically going for 2.5 years straight. Apparently she has another full album almost finished but it will not be released until December so she can keep supporting her current stuff.

AWESOME link where Gaga discusses her philosophy with her two backup dancers two months before her first album came out.

I'll just get a guitarist/drummer who can write songs later and then I'll have a great band with Cocker as the singer... he's a better lead singer than most of them taken imo.

Round 6, Pick 115

Spoiler:
- over 100 million records sold
- named "Female Entertainer of the Century" by Billboard Magazine in 1976
- 18 #1 singles in the United States
- most successful female music artist in history as per the 1993 Guinness Book of World Records
- The original American pop diva

Spoiler:

Diana Ross

This is a BPA pick that's heavily influenced by the R&B side of my label. Diana might be the most iconic diva in pop music history and tbh I'm kinda shocked she's still available. Regardless, there is no way I can pass on her here and I'm excited to pick her in round 6.

First coming to prominence with The Supremes in the early 60s, while still in her teens, the lead vocal talents of Ross propelled the all-female group to unprecedented success. For a time in the mid 60's, the worldwide popularity of The Supremes rivaled The Beatles; their 12 #1 singles on the Billboard Top 100 still makes them America's most successful vocal group ever. Ross was an extremely influential figure in the advancement of female African American R&B musicians during the era, breaking down barriers and paving the way for future superstar divas such as Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. In fact, a very strong argument can be made that without Diana Ross, we probably don't see the emergence of the aforementioned artists and others.

Ross left the Supremes in 1970 to pursue a solo career under advice from Motown executives. The move paid dividends for Ross, as she charted 5 more #1 singles during the decade and also delivered an Acadamy Award-nominated performace as the lead actress in the 1972 undrafted biopic Lady Sings the Blues (the subsequent soundtrack reached #1 in the US). Her final #1 single with Motown Records came in the form of a duet in 1981 with another undrafted star; the song "Endless Love" will forever be remembered as the basis for turning point of the relationship between Happy Gilmour and Virginia Venit.

More stuff happens after this I guess...notably, Ross leaves Motown in 1981 and signs a $20 million deal with RCA (the most lucrative contract in music history at the time), she throws one of the biggest free concerts in history at Central Park in 1983 with over 500,000 people showing up...she does some coke during the 80s...does a lot of coke during the 80s...yada yada yada, I'm tired.

Sorry, this writeup had a lot of promise but I need to fall asleep very soon. Basically, Diana Ross is an incredible talent and she's a friggin' steal in the 6th round. I can't wait for her collaborations with Stevie and Smokey. Plus, now I've locked down my marquee female lead talent. R&B + Rock = ship the sauce.

Geddy Lee Records:

- Stevie Wonder
- Pete Townshend
- John Paul Jones
- Smokey Robinson
- Jeff Beck
- Diana Ross

lol sorry TSC.

I really have no idea how Diana freakin' Ross slipped to 115th overall, but I'm happy to put home the rebound.

ross is a ****ing steal here, and i'm not a particular fan of hers. i can not believe she lasted this long. i could understand slipping to round 3 given to the musical biases of 20something male poker players, but jesus christ.

fyi, on the redding pick, this was one of the motown artists D104 and I were referring to.

edit: that's a really good version of where did our love go. like it a lot.

I never really listened to The Smiths before, just checked out one of their compilations and didn't dislike it. Pretty good imo.

OMG

Why o why o why have I never heard Astral Weeks before? My dad is one of the biggest van fans around but I was never that fussed, decided to give him another go and I can't stop listening to him.

I actually prefer the 1967 New York session of Madame George though.

I think it's the latter in most cases. If Ten isn't your favorite or close to it, you're doing it wrong.

Anyway,

Also, yeah there actually is another undrafted or two that belongs in that group I guess. I'd put them behind Nirvana and ahead of Soundgarden.

haha nice hint. i thought that's who you meant.

I'm not sure exactly how to rank those big bands from that era. I was a fan of them all growing up and still am for the most part even though I rarely listen to any of them now. I know I'd rank the Smashing Pumpkins* last or next to last. And Nirvana probably first. Then I'd change my mind on those inbetween depending on my mood.

* Smashing Pumpkins are super high variance to me. A lot of their stuff is incredible. A lot of it is awful, like completely unlistenable. It's mostly polarized to these extremes too I think.
