Indeed, his utter failure in this series has been a real shot in the arm.

This was our chance. If we'd lost the WC and won the ashes I think I'd feel a lot worse.
I'm totally the reverse. I'd happily swap the abject humiliation of losing every game in the WC to have drawn the 4th test and win this one.

idgaf about the world cup other than the fact that our victory pisses some other nationalities off. ashes all day

good that we've won the jofra in our team for 15 years cup and the dave warner's career ended cup, both very impactful. also got an all-time moment in the 3rd test.

shame about the ashes cup

Never knew the ashes meant so much to you. Good to see.

I think the Ashes should go to a super over on the event of a 2-2 tie.

I think we should give the ashes to England since it's 2 wins a piece and England had a "winning draw" which comes into play as a tie breaker.

but seriously I think that Australia were the better team over the series and the scoreline flatters England slightly.

Can anybody be bothered to find out how many sessions each team won?

The scoreline flatters England because of the selection decisions of Langer!

FWIW I think Oz edged it, but 2-2 is still a reasonably fair score imo. Eng almost held on for a draw in the fourth match and were ahead in the rain-effected draw. It wouldn't have taken much for Eng to have won the series.

Re Warner: "Ninety five runs in 10 Test innings, the lowest ever return for an opener playing a five-Test series." haha

Re Langer: I know Starc wasn't at his best, but he comes in fresh and at least looks dangerous, not to mention scoring 50 odd not out with the bat - and then he gets dropped for Siddle. Wtf.

Is it just me who thinks "oh great, a free hit" whenever anyone bowls a no-ball? That would be awesome in a test match!

Marcus Trescothick is 43.
Paul Collingwood retired at 42.
Graham Gooch retired at 44.
Brian Close and Geoff Boycott both retired at 46.

When Mike Brearley returned to take over from Ian Botham as England captain in 1981, he was 39.

Win the toss and bowl first at the OVAL. Not a good decision by Paine/Langer. Time to bring in Steve Waugh.

Well all those are noted players with vast international experience. Plus you could play onto your late 30s and early 40s up to 30 years ago and before that. Not these days and it isn't like this guy is some sort of marquee player that deserves his name to be mentioned amongst the names you spoke of.

Anyone else think that Steve Waugh will have more involvement in the Aussie set-up this Australian summer? I'd much prefer he take over as coach actually but he probably wouldn't want the responsibility.

I don't understand how teams keep ****ing up the toss decision. If bowling conditions are so favorable that you're pretty desperate to win the toss then bowl, otherwise bat. It should never be a hard decision.

This is an interesting story. He didn't explode as a young player, but by his mid 20s was pretty solid at the county level. And, it looks like, he's still producing. Obviously the double ton and the wickets in the next innings pump up the averages, but Kent were already backing away from not renewing his contract before this game.

Is there a magic number age for not being a first class cricketer?

Very true - you should be only bowling first if it is a 4 day game (or preferably less) and you are desperate for a win (and not a draw). That is, you have to win to win the series or competition or whatever it may be that you are playing for.

There’s always going to be outliers.
I remember John Childs getting a shock test debut at 36 in, I think, 1988. He also made 12th man 3 years later. He was a spinner and continued for a couple of years for his county.
Jimmy will probably make 40 before he retires from tests and he will be an extreme case as a pace bowler and he’ll probably retire from all cricket.
Misbah was still playing tests at 42.

Historically there have always been plenty of over 40 county players. Over 40 Test players for England post-WW2 are relatively rare - although the 1972 series (Lillee's first Ashes series) had MJK Smith and Colin Cowdrey as staples as well as Brian Close in the one-day side. For the counties it's a balance of what they have to pay, knowing what you are getting against developing talent, loyalty, etc

WG Grace was still playing test and first class cricket in his 50s
