hehe I haven't seen him this new season (whichever one it is in Brazil) yet, but I still feel confident that I will be proved right of course (based on my earlier impressions) AND was actually kinda hoping you'd already be changing your tune a little bit since it seems (based on paper and some hype starting up again) that he has found form again after the all post-Olympic troubles.

edit:

but yes, Robben will rise again but avoided it on purpose with him and other early strugglers now making comebacks to cling on to a mid-season feel (like talked about earlier).

Aguero is one though where I kind of want to move him further down. And part of it that his case is weaker than others against Bale. Sure his decisiveness is awesome and even though his touches are better than Bale's, the way Bale is going now he is even more decisive and his off-the ball work has been picking up enough to not make that area a whitewash for Kun.
I think Aguero is fine because while he wasn't great this year, he's still really young and will bounce back. Isco, El Shawaarwy, Wilshere could join Gotze this time next year.

Ramsey will be back on your list this time next year. No way he's worse then Parker. We got him out of a CAM/Winger role and have put him beside Arteta and he's shown discipline/composure I didn't think he had. The burden of not having to make key passes is off of him, he doesn't slow the game down or turn into trouble. Just wasn't a player to primarily play in the final third and we've figured that out. About 15 really strong performances in a row.

Top 40 is quite solid imo.

Hmmm so we have about 4 attacking midfielders here. Neither Iniesta or Fabregas (both talked about in the attacking mid rundown) were in this category the last time around so they rudely jump in and steal/occupy a couple of spots. Iniesta and his overall work is a must here while I feel more uneasy about Fabregas and not least where to put him here. Despite all the attacking mid/forward movement coming from him these days, I just can't ignore someone with 70+ passes per game. In the Spanish league that's almost the same as Iniesta.

Maybe the big question for some was Xavi or Iniesta as number one. I think the real question is rather if I'll finally have Iniesta go past on the overall 300 list. Despite growing opposite narrative and popular opinion I didn't really think it was close the last time around and wrote a post I might have to dig up again on the issue, but it's definitely closer this time so we will just have to wait and see what on earth I end up doing!

When it comes to the midfielders I really think it's crazy close behind those two and many have arguments over each other.

I just can't put Pirlo over a prime Fabregas though and maybe it's just that which secures Cesc's third place. Even Fabregas gets overshadowed at Barcelona quite a bit but he is no doubt a brilliant 4-3-3 midfielder with superb touches and playmaking whether it's a very fluid midfield role or the attacking-mid that he is mostly associated with.

It's hard to say anything new about Pirlo. The last time I applauded how great it was to see him finally in a 4-3-3 with many modern elements such as passing it out from the back almost always, generally playing possession, even with periods of being higher up the pitch and (at least his surroundings) pressing well.
Into his 30s and slower than at his peak (where I'm pretty sure pre-Messi and C. Ronaldo at various points he MUST have been the best player in the world so **** Cannavaro especially him, Kaka and even Ronaldinho's peak was pretty short) it all resulted in something of a landmark season of more Pirlo touches and passes than maybe ever before. It was godsend.

This season some of those elements have been removed as Juventus for good (not least defensively) and bad has exclusively gone 3-5-2, Pirlo largely remains Pirlo though and overall possession is not down all that much in Serie A at least.
Pirlo is the OG modern deep-lying playmaker. With genius flair and skill. Eyes everywhere and THAT unmatched skill when it comes to deeper passes. Especially over the defense. But overall of course a master passer of the ball any way you can think of.

There are more and more good and great midfield distributors but when it comes to actually creating, Pirlo is in a league of his own.

So Xabi Alonso.... I guess I continue my habit of having him over the likes of Busquets and Schweinsteiger but yeah it's very close.
Someone like Toure, though he is ahead of Busquet's I don't even think has a case in this category. Alonso just improves a team in ways that he can't or at least has never done consistently.

There is nothing not to like about Schweinsteiger's midfield work. His outstanding distribution, leadership, physical capability, all-round skillset. I just think that Alonso is that slight tiny step ahead tactically when the going gets really tough. But it's hard to define how exactly. Maybe some great pushing up winning the ball with his team high up the pitch or the one touch pass or difference making longer ball (where he is the well known master of course) at exactly the perfect moment to start something good.

And he is so crucial for Madrid. I still remember a rather convincing analysis by Laudrup once that he was their most important player, at the very least rivaling Ronaldo. Everything goes through him and if La Liga tv production replays didn't suck like they just happen to do, they'd catch a lot more of the stuff that he starts when replaying one Ronaldo goal after another. Manchester United man marked him the other day and most things fell into pieces with Madrid creating less than in any game in recent memory.
Xabi Alonso is maybe the most consistently constructive player in football with his touches and passes. And it's everywhere on the pitch.

Now Toni Kroos both in the midfield and attacking midfield top 10 is something of a spoiler about just how good his overall rank will be. I think he has become Zonal Markings favorite player, who calls him tactically perfect or maybe it's even the best tactical player in the world. Something like that anyway (will google later) and it's sentiments that I can't really disagree with. He just moves and passes perfectly, finding and taking advantage of space to optimal degrees, and of course on top of that his technique is masterful whether it's control, passing (short, long, delivering) or shooting. I'm so impressed with all these things, that even though he is mainly an attacking midfielder, I'm convinced it translates just great into 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 midfield constellations. I disagree with any claim that the opposite has already been proven when he has played there. Far from it I think.

If I see no argument for Toure's more up and down excellence and decisiveness over the consistent constructiveness and close to perfect tactical teamwork of Alonso in this category, maybe Busquets should have a case over Toure as well.

There is no question he plays his role, now even named after him, to perfection. Both with and without the ball. Skilled passing and ball movement, including up the middle which is something of a litmus test separating the good and great midfielders. Then without the ball his spoiler qualities are well known.

I'm also not completely unconvinced anymore of him further forward. He has technique and intelligence to do well, but also with his particular physical characteristics in mind and that you rarely see him "up there", I'm not ready to make it something enough in his favor to elevate him further.

With that I gotta go to sleep but I think I can find hours tomorrow as well, to either argue, expand on some of these orderings (or some earlier ones that I didn't have time for now) or hey maybe even finish the overall 300. Thanks for following
Ok let me revisit the final top 100 midfielder-post and especially the bolded. I made a final decision the other day but obviously I have some final doubts and I'm kinda afraid to go back and read the Iniesta vs Xavi post that I mention, but I guess I should.... Sooooo will there finally be some top 4 change??????

Bale should be higher right now imo. We had the discussion on the attacking players about his ranking and he went on to have a great couple of months from there.

Iniesta finally topples Xavi then.

Here is what I said the last time:

Quote:
Iniesta, apart from maybe Messi, can do the most difficult things of anyone when it comes to close-control.

I wouldn't say he flatters to deceive (remember this was sometimes even said of Zidane) or he wouldn't be ranked where he was. Those insanely difficult things that he is able to do, often well hidden from various stats, make Barcelona even better but a season with this few goals (in La Liga amazingly he only scored two! Two! Even Xavi has 10) and as I remember it somewhat of a letdown in the CL, in the stats arguably not coming through 1v1 at his usual rate, matched up against Xavi's impact of getting close to double the amount of tiki taka passes and touches and I don't even think it's written in stone that Iniesta, directly or indirectly create more chances than Xavi. Overall then, I just don't think Iniesta's argument, based on this season, is all that strong.
First of all a 96 out of 96 passes game for Xavi like recently against PSG can still make me uneasy about this long awaited switch but on the other hand that was one of the least impressive Barca teams in recent years and Xavi more than anyone, his ranking and everything, has been tied to his influence on how Barca (and Spain) perform. In short: I do think I see some Xavi decline, if nothing else, just that he has a few more off periods during a season.

However if you look at Xavi various numbers they're still speaking volumes about his tiki-taka mastery and influence, meaning any current Xavi decline is still not nearly enough for Iniesta to go ahead of Xavi without raising his own game significantly from last season, which despite any narrative (and award contention) wasn't very good other than in the end for the national team.

Iniesta still isn't scoring goals unfortunately but it is what is and at least in this particular matchup Xavi is also scoring less.
Importantly Iniesta's dribbling is better this season, where not least in the CL last season it could be him failing to be decisive that let Barca down and in comparison with Xavi his chance-creating (key passes) compares much better than it did last season and that's without (unless I'm very wrong) similar indirect setpiece responsibilites to Xavi and of course then there is Iniesta's very impressive assist tally which speaks for itself.

I think those things are a nice response to my previous case against Iniesta who also just by watching the two appear fresher these days and ignoring the differences between them (where eye-test Iniesta will usually be more impressive) it is clear that Iniesta is closer to also be able to do what Xavi does than Xavi do what Iniesta can do. That's not really a criticism of Xavi who's numbers many seasons has indicated he does even better than Iniesta doing his own famous thing as much as it is an fantastic compliment to Iniesta for his amazing not least technique and intelligence but some underrated physical capabilities as well.

The final result right here. Everything should be in that entry.

I resisted any late-late changes pretty well (though Bale still haunts me) and only moved Benzema, Piszczek and Arbeloa down some. Benzema and Piszczek nothing major while Arbeloa I think has been unimpressive enough this season (finally in my eyes as well you could say) that I just couldn't have him stay where he was on the overall list .

Thanks everyone for following. It took a long time but I really did like doing the position by position first to lay a solid foundation for the overall list which I think has made me a lot happier than usual with the end result this time.

My best guess for the end of the season list would be around or after the Confederations Cup in June. It would be really nice for once not to have it go into the start of a new season which just messes everything up with millions of changes to be made almost instantly, but we'll see what happens. Cheers.

I don't think it's happening on the next list already but we'll see.

Just out of curiosity how do you think the world would view Xavi and Iniesta if they played for a team and system that were not so tailor-made for them? Let's say one them played for Spurs and the other played for Arsenal for example.

Thanks! Will look at your question later.

First though it is once again time for the infamous nation numbers. I'm skipping the clubs since it's just chaos with all the transfers.

This time I counted using the position lists (so not just just the 300 overall then) and of course carefully tried to avoid counting versatile players twice....

Brazil 53
Spain 50

France 42 (I think I was surprised the last time as well but they really do produce tons of players. That generally they are so massively exported to the biggest leagues outside of France helps too)

Germany 28
Argentina 27
Italy 27
England 21
Portugal 15

Netherlands 12 (definitely hurt by some hesitation on including players from their league until I feel like I have good read and many of the young players Van Gaal is giving caps are also just outside of many of the different lists. Someone like Adam Maher I just hadn't seen enough)

Belgium 12 (your time is now! Well ranked players too and even the ones not with fantastic ranks I think either I've underrated or have serious upsides)

Uruguay 6
Serbia 6 (another surprise but it's all those defenders)
Colombia 5
Mexico 5
Cameroun 5
Croatia 5
Ghana 5
Côte d'Ivoire 5
Russia 4
Chile 4
Turkey 4
Wales 4
Bosnia and Herzegovina 3
Senegal 3
USA 3
Switzerland 3
Japan 3
Poland 3
Ukraine 3
Paraguay 2
Morocco 2
Denmark 2
Montenegro 2
Peru 2
Venezuela 1
South Korea 1
South Africa 1
Greeece 1
Sweden 1
Hungary 1
Ecuador 1
Kenya 1
Austria 1
Bulgaria 1
Armenia 1
Finland 1 (yes I decided to have Eremenko replace Kuchar)
Northern Ireland 1
Togo 1

Take a look at how the world viewed Modric at Spurs and how they viewed Cazorla at Arsenal during the first half of this season. Then enhance that. :-)

Nice way of putting it tbh

The issue with that is as well, they're two good for both those clubs so would only get one season at them anyway.

The question was hypothetical to begin with, so this "issue" is hardly an issue at all.

It sounds right but easier said than done with all these great players.

Basically, I think from 29th all the way to the top 10, maybe even into it, almost everything is up for grabs with many players having cases over each other.

Bale vs Cazorla I still think is kind of a toss up. Maybe it's a clear Bale victory for most but then I think they're underrating Cazorla.

Bale even has close cases against the other attacking mids/wingers further up the list, but maybe crucially in determining his ranking, compared to them his touches, overall impact and influence on a game away from the glorious decisiveness, for some reason (to me) don't match up well with all the best central midfielders ahead of him. On the other hand with guys like Ribery, Hazard, Mata, Götze, Ôzil at least I can point to their technique and how it makes them great in small space combinations with teammates, do excellent playmaking, and rightly or wrongly that giving them a better case than Bale in the matchups (generally speaking cause each player is different) with the likes of the central midfielders Toure, Alonso, Schweinsteiger who make teams really good with their overall work.

I hinted Bale moving well into what I call forward-territory would be his best ticket into the top 10. Similar to Ronaldo, use his fantastic physical gifts and kicking technique to get into scoring positions with their great advantage simply being then that they have many more scoring positions available to them than almost anyone else.

That's still kind of new though when it comes to Bale but no doubt the right move compared to making him a more traditional attacking midfielder with many touches. But you can't say that he has the completeness as a forward that Ronaldo has, not least off-the ball all over those scoring positions available to them, the best and most important example of course being in the box.

I think right now I would have Bale 13th on my Forward list behind Neymar and Lewandowski.

edit:

I did also move Bale up the list since then ahead of quite a few he was originally behind before he exploded in the new year. Di Maria who did add the traditional attacking mid elements central of the pitch into his game that I used to find missing with Bale and also Reus who had the off-the ball and teamwork mastery that's lacking a little bit with Bale, so in my mind very tough obstacles passed already.

I am sorry for not searching before asking, but if you havent made one already, i am sure me among others would love a write-up on Neymar and false/true perceptions of him and valid/invalid comparisons that include him. I am fairly sure i watch way more Brazilian football than most here but im not knowledgeable enough to assess his skill in neither relative nor absolute terms.

its like nba, tiers of eliteness is way more of a bigger deal than rankings

I mean its like labron/durant/cp3 then drop-off

in soccer its messi/cr7 in historically mega-elite tier, ibra in ultra-elite tier, then bunch of midfielders and less talented forward types

Keisuke Honda is finally healthy again and has been playing very well. He is such an intelligent and skilled (passing+kicking) midfield operator.

He can't quite compete with Mkhitaryan's big breakthrough year though. Even if I'm not totally convinced how good he really (really) is, it can't be denied that he's been getting the job done to an extreme degree becoming Shakhtar's big scoring threat.

Outside of Ibrahimovic, Aubameyang is the best performing striker in France this season. His pace can be devastating. The rest of what he can or can't do (he has less than 0.5 successful dribbles per game the last two seasons) will determine how good he really is. From what I've seen (not enough) I do still have some reservations about his overall technique.
Bump because I was curious
