I've started and stopped a long post about the state of the Padres this year several times but it's just become sad at this point so I've lost the motivation. I'd say maybe 2024 is their year but at this point I don't see anything to make me believe that next year will be better than this year. GG to all of the players who cashed in stupidly overpriced long-term contracts and get to sit on their asses hitting .220 for the next dozen years.

Meanwhile, the Braves have won 16 of their last 17, have 8 all stars, and everybody’s under contract for a comparably reasonable number, forever.

We might do better than 14 straight division titles again with this run.

I'm stuck rooting for the Mets, but the Braves are so much better run that it's hilarious at this point.

2 years ago in a game at Kansas City the Yankees had 4 pitchers blow save opportunities in 4 consecutive innings. Took the lead in the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th inning and finally won it in 11.

In light of Ohtani's two-way dominance, I was thinking about how to encourage more two-way talent and counterintuitively, I think the answer is more DH. Give every team 2 DH spots and make them position independent, i.e. you can DH for any position, not just the pitcher. This way, pitchers that can hit are even more valuable, because they are saving one of the DH spots - they don't have to outhit the DH, they just have to outhit the worst hitter in the lineup - and pitchers that can hit well enough to DH on days they are not pitching are even more valuable because they just have to be good enough for one of the two DH spots, rather than taking up the only one. This should also make the game more exciting by encouraging some truly great defensive players that aren't consistent MLB-level hitters to be able to play. This also should eliminate the Schwarber-type situation (he should really be the DH but Harper can't play the field right now) and teams putting a lot of bad fielders who should be DH'ing most of the time at 1B.

just unreal.
I was looking through MLB stats just now, and Ohtani's tied for the lead with 5 triples. Because of course he'd be. It would've been weird if he wasn't at the top of some category.

If baseball dominated sports like it did in the 50's and 60's he'd be on every cereal box and magazine. A hundred Morganna's would be running on the field every night to kiss him.

Yes of course and that caveat hardly needs to be stated re the new rule (except by some, apparently, no surprise there). The point of the context was that in decades of watching games ("greatest live game he's ever seen") these extra inning roller coaster jobs were quite rare. And so in the 20,000 games or so in the history of the Reds, how many times have they come back down twice in extra innings and won the game? Let's see the list of games in which the Reds have done this. Your mouth is open, you're in my world ... let's see it. I go back to Pete Rose's first game, Pete surrounded by Frank Robinson, Johnny Edwards, Vada Pinson, Leo Cardenas,Tommy Harper, Gordie Coleman, etc. Let's see the list of games in say just these last 60 years since Rose came up in which this happened.

Spoiler:
Whoops.

Screw the dh
Ohtani should play the outfield and make the entire league feel inferior in every facet of the game.

And since they have the dh when ohtani pitches the other team shouldn't get one for that game.

Astros blew a 10-2 lead.
They also won.

Schwarber enters today with one of the strangest lines I’ve ever seen

22 homers (7th in baseball)
.188 avg
0.0 war

Hopefully his value will increase when he doesn't have to field. As a fan, he can play for as long as he wants...

Kingman was kind of a prototype of this ... among the league leaders in dingers often struggling to get out of the negatives in WAR. With attitude.

Broken wrist for trout

Really wonder how you’re supposed to evaluate this guy’s career. Easily a top 5 all time player with absolutely nothing achieved from it

I leave off the “absolutely nothing achieved with it” part, (which is true), and start and end with “easily a top 5 all time player” part.

That must have been an interesting 9th in the Padres win. I almost never watch when I bet. Somebody posted on here that Ohtani was going televised, and I've never seen him throw a pitch. I snap figured he wouldn't be sharp when I finally saw him. I took Padres -1.5 runs +154 ... with the score 0-0 after 2. So the 9th with Pads up 8-1 goes single, triple, sac fly. Okay, they roughed him up some and earned the runs. Nobody on, five run lead. Then apparently it went HBP, walk, walk, walk, K, walk. Jimminy H Christmas. So from up 5 with one out, with no hits the Angels are a single from covering the -1.5 runs. l I don't watch when I bet precisely because of sickness like that, so I just checked the score a few minutes ago. Winner with sick sweat if you watch. Saw Ohtani hanging sliders in the second. Then bet and tuned out. Winner.

Just saw a Cowherd rant in which he declard Ohtani the GOAT MLB player ... saying "No I didn't see Ruth or Cobb." Then, bizarrely, he says, "Bo Jackson couldn't pitch." Then he said it again. It's like the non-sequitur of the millenium. But I think he really must have Bo on his short list of GOATs.

Padres say to Angels if we can't have nice things...kinda ruined LAA franchise in 2 games. Game 1, Trout suffered a fracture of the hamate bone in his left hand in 10-3 loss. Today, Ohtani stuggles, leaves with a blister in 8-5 loss. So, if him staying was contingent on Angels making playoffs...that dream is dead without Trout.
