He was never going to stay long term. Just to the end of the season at best. I think the Dodgers have a really good chance now to pick up Ohtani at the trade deadline.

yeah likely all wishful thinking on the part of the Angels. Ohtani probably wants out no matter what. now i guess they trade him.

Ken Rosenthal says otherwise ...

Quote:
Ken’s Notebook: So, Why Not Trade Ohtani?
I’m thinking it, you’re thinking it, we’re all thinking it. But even though the Angels are in free fall, it would be an upset – a shock, even – if they dealt Shohei Ohtani.

Oh, the theoretical case for trading Ohtani is growing stronger, and not simply because the Angels have lost 10 of 14, falling four games out in the wild-card race and seven back in the AL West.

The likely addition of Rendon on top of Trout to the injured list will give the team a major-league-high 15 players on the IL. Ohtani, too, is dealing with a physical issue, a blister on his right middle finger. But even if he resumes pitching after the All-Star break, it’s difficult to imagine the Angels overcoming their injuries, not to mention their deficiencies, and making their first postseason appearance since 2014.

So, why not trade Ohtani?

Because once he is gone, the cord is cut. Few players, after getting traded, re-sign as free agents with the teams that moved them. The Angels want to advance the premise they will attempt to keep Ohtani. Owner Arte Moreno almost certainly doesn’t want to be responsible for trading a player who is the best of our generation, and maybe the best of all-time.

Yes, the Angels control Ohtani for only three more months. Yes, general manager Perry Minasian could get more for him in a trade than the draft pick in the 75 to 80 range the team would receive if Ohtani rejected a qualifying offer. But good luck getting anything resembling fair value for a player who doubles as one of the league’s top hitters and starting pitchers. And if the return proved inadequate, Moreno and Minasian would never live it down.

Better the Angels keep Ohtani, bank the additional revenue he generates, then extend him an offer they can sell to their fans as competitive and fair, even if it is one he is almost certain to refuse. That way, they would preserve their slim odds of making the postseason, which according to Fangraphs currently stand at 20.4 percent. With three wild cards available, Moreno and his front office, as long as the team doesn’t utterly crash, could justify pushing forward. It’s the safer path, sure. But it beats the downside of the alternative.

So the general premise of bowtie’s argument is ‘keep Ohtani and miss the playoffs cuz at least that way when he leaves in the off-season you can at least say you made him an offer?’

Ok

That's right. So as to not go down as the guy behind Lew Alcindor to the Lakers.

No idea if there's any truth to it but at least the media tells that story consistently since last years trade deadline. The one thing that changed is the alleged reasoning behind it though. Last year and in the offseason it was about Moreno not wanting to trade Ohtani while he was trying to sell the team. Now that the sale appears to be off it would have to be Moreno trying to avoid bad publicity. Sounds less credible to me than the previous reason.

Ohtani probably won't even miss a start with the All Star break timing.
The trout thing dooms them.

Spotrac has them #14 with $181mil, roughly 50% of the Mets but 3x A's.

Yeah, 1/2 the Mets, idk how long these owners think they can get away with this. Fine, found some future youth. Now break the bank.

Betts, of course, was terrible, but ok, it's a wakeup to a new philosophy, fans satiated with a recent ring. Got a bloated payroll with Price...ok w/e. And it's true, Rays, Royal...the Yankees the other way, Mets, money isn't 100% correlation to ring. JD, that's a lot for him, Boegarts seems to be aging a bit. Benetendi...bye. And they paid Devers.

But f all that. Enough. “Are you not entertained?” No, not really.

I thought it was funny some reporter was saying what Ohtani does well is he "stays on the ball and uses center field." Brilliant. Why didn't these other guys think of that instead of getting blown away by high 98 after waiving at breaking ****. Just stay on the ball.

For clarity, I meant, from a fan's standpoint, and winning baseball, letting go of Betts was "terrible", but maybe justifiable at the time with Price's contract and a looking forward to a new era, looking to develop players. JD and Boegarts, losing them is ok, but only if you did it to make a big splash coming into 2024. But if it's we're cheap and rich and Euros and let's be scrappy overachievers...f that.

on that link, I see 1 out, 1st and 2nd...that's just some...he was thinking hard to begin with and before he fielded it..."ok...glove it...omg what base?" Let go of it laughably early. I'm seldom perfect at my job but I can fake it. Can't fake airmailing the throw to first in the bottom of the 9th.

watching mets - dbacks and lindor has hit back to back triples. pretty sure that is rarer than hitting back to back HR.

He'd have a cycle by the 6th if he'd have held up at second on one of them.
