It should be noted that if Trump isn't out of office by then, this is a best case scenario.
After 15 more months of this administration, the government we know and love may no longer exist, and the damage done could be irreparable.
What's the recourse when it's discovered that GOP won enough 2018 elections to stay in power by cheating (like death threats and SO MANY other ways), and nobody is left in government to hold them accountable?
Just something extremely desperate & stupid (like firing Mueller) can happen in a matter of minutes and has devastating implications if left unattended to by a Republican Congress. Firing the special counsel has to be done by the Justice Department or by changing the rules completely. The latter is too obviously a black mark, so having the DOJ do the firing is Trump's most likely action. That move would create a mass exodus of career professionals, first from the Justice Department, then from other areas of the government shortly after. Then Trump has control of who is or is not doing investigations in private and many many other things. Trump opponents in the government will either leave empty seats or be replaced by loyalty pledging yes-men like we saw yesterday at the WH, and all of it completely up to Trump's discretion.
Once AGs, lower courts, grand juries, and independent investigations are taken care of, it's SCOTUS time. Trump has 2/3 of the branches and just needs 1 for full control. He's already got a 5-4 lead there too. Add in any other appointments before the end of next year and it's double game over.
I think we're in a ton of trouble right now. Trump has so much margin for error that his evil aspirations alone may carry him through this.
EDIT: Lower courts may take longer than the SCOTUS for Trump to control.
