I don't think Trump cares about immigration one way or the other, at least not much. When he hears people say they are in favor of immigration, they just have to do it legal, he believes them. It's the same level of thinking that gets him talking about steel slats and barriers. He doesn't understand stuff.

I hope this hurts him with his base and helps him with no one.

I hear the "in favor of immigration, but legal immigration" quite a lot from deplorables and even other immigrants. On a superficial level, they believe it to be true. But if you were to dig a bit deeper, you'd realize that like most of their beliefs, they go no deeper than that one sentence. They immediately contradict themselves when it is pointed out that asylum seeking is a form of legal immigration and that opposing it contradicts being in favor of legal immigration.

Trump supporters are functionally stupid human beings. The organization they belong to, the GOP, creates a climate that discourages deeper thinking and deviating from the party line. So they consume their bull**** and don't ask questions. Asking questions is considered an un-American activity by Republicans. It's why they hate protesting so much.

I like how Dara Lin phrased it, that when Trump ad libs he usually ad libs superlatively regardless of what else is in the speech. If I remember correctly right after that he said something that would imply cutting legal immigration. It's the same annoying thing where people are the greatest, most handsome, and things are the biggest and greatest every time.

Its also amusing how the right always insists on the highest possible estimates of the illegal immigrant population being accurate without recognizing that the illegal immigrant population being that high (over 30 million!) would only further demonstrate the lack of damage that illegal immigrants create.

Illegal immigrants are destroying the job market and causing violent crime.

I'm shocked that you missed the point Inso0. The point is that people will take the path of least resistance. So if you build wall in a few places, the border crossings will stop there and they'll go somewhere with no wall. If you wall it all the way off, people will user ladders at the easiest/safest place to do so.

But the even more important point here is that two-thirds (and growing, I would imagine) of illegal immigrants come here legally on visas and then overstay.

The real criminals in this are the people being bigots and racists trying to keep out anyone who doesn't look like them. If we just properly expanded legal immigration and legal work permits, we'd significantly reduce illegal immigration overnight.
