The last time I was at the range they told me you would not want range ammo for home defense.

Confirm/deny?
02-22-2013 , 01:30 AM
I'm not even close to nowhere close to being an expert, but I do know that is confirmed.

Better than nothing though.

Home defense ammo packs more punch with more powder and a heavier bullet, which is usually hollow point. I think pretty much all range ammo is full metal jacket, and the bullets are on the light side, and the cartridges are on the weak side.

afaik

Dude, some people bring ****ing cannons to the range afaict

A home defense round has a purpose. A hollow point round is generally going to expand and possibly stop inside a human. This is helpful if over penetration is a concern. Your FMJ range ammo is certainly going to work if you need it, but it's not going to be "ideal."

You're either rich, wasteful, or both if you are going to use a home/self/whatever defense round at the range. Shooting a few to gain familiarity is fine, but range ammo is range ammo because it's cheap and allows you to practice without destroying your wallet.

There's probably a million more reasons if you want to get into grain/primer/etc. Your range ammo is probably not going to be as reliable either. But really it's simple, range at the range. Home defense at the home.

Sometimes I double them up with the surefire sonic defenders. Get some eye protection while you're at it.
That's a different unit.

Mine have an audio input jack. Sometimes I use it to play different audio backgrounds, sometimes ill input a handheld radio for room clearing drills. Usually I just plug in my iPhone and listen to music.

My main purpose for getting them is to allow me to hear students questions on the firing line without having to remove my ear protection. They don't have near the decibel reduction of a pair of those plastics, but they reduce enough for my comfort and I can still hear to teach.

I'd prefer range ammo to running out the back door leaving my wife and kids to fend for themselves, but it's not ideal.

An expanding hollow point round will stop a threat more efficiently than a FMJ round will.

Lirva, clutch decision getting a gun before they institute universal background checks.

02-22-2013 , 02:20 AM
If he bought it at Academy, he went through a background check lol.

stop ruining jokes

DBJ pissing in cheerios

02-22-2013 , 02:29 AM
Oh yeah that's a sweet brag though right? I passed a federal background check! They'll let anyone pass those things!
02-22-2013 , 02:43 AM
Hell I honestly wasn't entirely sure he was aware that a background check was a requirement to buy a gun now.

You never know with some people.
02-22-2013 , 02:52 AM
It's not a requirement for buying a gun.
02-22-2013 , 03:26 AM
This isn't really the place for this, but it is a learning environment so please school us all on how to walk into Academy and not fill out a ATF-4473 and leave with a gun.

I was getting semantical with you

ETA: in case it's not clear: you didn't say "it's a requirement to do a bg check where Lirva bought it" (true) you said "it's a requirement to do a bg check to buy a gun now" (not true).

;P

Any thoughts on a good holster for a Glock 17 9mm? Had it for quite some time, but since IL is gonna have to pass a version of CC by June, I'd like to have a holster in case I do end up getting a permit and deciding to carry.

Also, any idea when people will stop freaking out and the price of AR's might come down somewhat? Interested in one, but not until they end up a little more reasonably priced....

Glock 17 is pretty big for concealed carry. That said, the Crossbreed SuperTuck is the usual recommendation for inside waist band holsters.

For outside waistband, the most popular holsters without retention (at least for competitors) seem to be those by CompTac and by BladeTech.

For holsters with retention, there was some discussion in this thread about that. IIRC, the Safariland ALS holsters were well-regarded.

I carry an even bigger Glock 21 in an IWB Comp-Tac CTAC all the time.

The biggest thing is make sure you get a good gun belt. It makes a HUGE difference over a crappy dress belt.
02-22-2013 , 07:34 PM
The C-Tac is a quality holster, most find the Crossbreed Supertuck more comfortable than the C-Tac.
02-22-2013 , 07:40 PM
That may very well be. The CTAC was the best when I bought it ~10 years ago though.
02-22-2013 , 07:48 PM
I use a CTAC for deep concealment FWIW.

They're the same, Howard Leight Impact Sport. Mine have the audio jack also.

Oh, cool.

I think the unit cost on mine was closer to $35 too, I just didn't see where the link you attached showed an input jack.
