A home defense round has a purpose. A hollow point round is generally going to expand and possibly stop inside a human. This is helpful if over penetration is a concern. Your FMJ range ammo is certainly going to work if you need it, but it's not going to be "ideal."
You're either rich, wasteful, or both if you are going to use a home/self/whatever defense round at the range. Shooting a few to gain familiarity is fine, but range ammo is range ammo because it's cheap and allows you to practice without destroying your wallet.
There's probably a million more reasons if you want to get into grain/primer/etc. Your range ammo is probably not going to be as reliable either. But really it's simple, range at the range. Home defense at the home.
