Yes, that's incredibly accurate and ironic.

is intrade betting on this stuff yet?

Closest I could find was lines on several leaders to be overthrown or resign with almost zero volume.

Will the replacement governments be secular ones that play nice with others or will they be repressive religious wackos?
02-17-2011 , 11:59 PM
Or how likely is one or the other, rather.
02-18-2011 , 12:02 AM
i think usa-backed replacement gov't is the most likely result after the dust settles

I'd been wondering what the Iranian regime thought it was going to do come the next election given what happened last time. Now I'm thinking that a whole lot of Iranians are going to get killed.

btw: Has anybody posted this video of the Iranian parliament chanting death to the opposition?

Immediately, probably not, but first election that religious wackos win will also be the last election.

What odds will you lay on this?

So, if these revolution/uprisings are being driven by educated and internet savvy social network types, why is it conceivable that religious wackos will take over? If autocratic regimes can't suppress them, why would zealots be more likely? It seems to me that these people are looking around at their lolcountries from the 1400s and being compelled to stand up for change, or at least rights. The "be afraid of the scary muzlums" line loses something when you see these people sharing in this experience with solidarity. It's more likely that they will recognize the power of internet communication and protect it. Then a lot more people will have to agree on something for it to go mainstream.

and it is quite ironical that much of this could be said for common Americans

10 to 1? But just so we clear, i am not talking about first election held in the country but first election that they win.

Some serious **** going down. There was a frenzied Bahraini doctor on earlier whose audio they're now looping, so you can still catch him. Apparently in Bahrain, the military rolled up to Pearl Roundabout and just started capping people in the head: no rubber bullets, no tear gas, no pussyfooting around with "go home." Just gunning them down. There may have been snipers, and there were shots from a helicopter. The doctor described hundreds of people lying in the streets, and ambulances are being denied from going to reach them. The hospital is way over capacity, and everyone has gunshot wounds

Senior officers in Iran's Revolutionary Guards have written a letter to their commanding officer demanding assurances that they will not be required to open fire on anti-government demonstrators.

Quote:
Following the recent violence that occurred during anti-government protests in Egypt, the officers argue that it is against the principles of Shi'ite Islamic law to use violence against their own people.
Considering that ruling regime would spill a lot of blood without hesitation, this is a really interesting development.
