Gowran Park - March 2014
My brother and I took our father to Ireland for his 70th birthday. I made sure we had a day at the track built into the trip and Gowran Park fit our schedule.
Changes board
This track was so in the middle of the country you could drive right past and miss it. There aren't many road signs in Ireland. And anyone who has been there can tell you asking for directions sometime makes things more complicated.
5 euro each way
Pops dropping some coin. At the start of the day he says "why don't we just put our money together and H can do the betting for us?" I said "oh no you don't!" LOL.
Bookie ring
My brother scooped me. I liked a horse in the third race. She had just won her maiden and it was her first try at a handicap. So my brother bets her each way with a rather good looking bookie. I go and bet at the tote each way plus an exacta.
We watched this one from the grandstand. Our horse passed 3 tiring leaders in the final furlong to win! And he got her at better odds than me. Outsmarted by my older brother! That was good for a laugh except for pops who had disappeared trying to smoke a cigar in a 20 mph breeze and had no action.
Better view of bookie ring
Can you guess which was my brother's favorite bookie?
Bring your binoculars!
One race was so long (3 miles 1 furlong) that it was sunny when the race started, the wind kicked up and it rained with some hail for about 2 minutes, then the sun broke back through before the finish!
Uphill run in the stretch
Long uphill run over the hurdles.
Circling for the start
I got to watch this one up close. It was great hearing the starters instructions and hearing the jockeys talk with eachother.
And they're off!
Up and over
This horse dominated the race start to finish.
Tougher the next time around
Still going strong kindly rated by one of the best riders.
Poetry in motion
We did not see a single horse fall the entire race card. Is this a rarity?
Walking ring
It was so cold and windy. The Irish are a tough breed. No gloves anywhere.

It was a great day at the races. A county fair type experience. And I finished up about 100 euro! I planned this for the last full day of our trip and was able to use the winning in the duty free on the way home. Whiskey anyone?
