This has always been my assumption of the etymology as well. In Greek it's pronounced something like "yeero," but there's a touch of aspiration in the y-sound that makes it seem to have a bit of h in it.
The name gyro comes from the spinning skewer (like gyroscope), BTW.
The fact that if the etymology is correct, "heroes" are almost entirely unlike gyros pisses me off, though it probably shouldn't.
