Notice the lack of mutual friends on most of these. If I click show all I have tons of people from HS and work that have 10+ mutual friends. But somehow these people are making it up to the initial dropdown list.

I also get a lot of these, and thought the same. Turns out we do indeed have a mutual friend in common, but his friends list is hidden (presumably because it's full of scam accounts that he thinks are hot women).

I only discovered this when I noticed him "liking" and commenting on one of the scam accounts' pictures.

I posted this on FB, to see if the same thing was happening to others. Here's a comment I got:

another likely explanation is they're gimmick accounts belonging to people who are/have previously been on your friend list. Though you could also be right and facebook may be allowing people to buy their way onto the suggestions list, it wouldn't shock me.

Ok I think I solved the mystery. The one mutual friend I have with a couple of those girls is a dude in my workout class who I barely know. Apparently he likes to befriend scammy-looking South American beauty pageant winners who only have a few friends. The rest of the girls are friends with the ones he's friends with.

I still want to know how those people shot up the list. Maybe because they're new and FB wants to get friends for them?

Lol looking at my full friend suggestion list - about half of the first few 100 are obviously some kind of model or pageant winner from around the globe - all with the same mutual friend. Funny thing is the guy is really rich. He alternatively drives a Hummer or some $100k Audi to class. He threw a party at his place - giant sprawling house in a gated community in Rolling Hills with panoramic ocean views. The car thing sounds like he's a toolbag, but he's actually a super nice guy who's also insanely driven. He does our really hard workout 6 days and never misses a day. He also stays after for 10-15 minutes to finish sets.

But apparently he's also really lonely or something. Heh, can't have everything.

The suggested friends that used to pop up for me had few friends. I think they're either new to facebook or facebook wants them to have more friends.

I don't know what percentage of kids like this actually go on to commit suicide. But the ones that do usually sound a lot like this and send out lots of warning signs. Do her parents know the posts she's making on FB?

Read them again. Those are way over the top. I helped raise a girl from 7 on. Most early teens didn't sound anything like that.

I guess we'd need to see the full context. Is it just brief crazy periods like that followed by genuinely happy stuff then I wouldn't be as worried. But if it's non-stop like that, or that and silence, that could be worse.

The best thing about Facebook for parents is being able to keep track of what their kids are up to. I just hope her parents are seeing that.

ok well, not gonna play psychologist or anything. just sayin. i got 2400 aged 14-20 teenagers on Facebook. The amount of look at me for say 12-15 is off the hook. Most grow out of it. The one's that don't I send out a "Justin Beiber sux" post every week and they get so enraged they remove me. saves a lot of work.

But yea, those messages/cries for help usually come thru pretty strong. That one quoted post wasn't one of em. just typical.
