Jefferies definitely got a little preachy in the home stretch but I thought the special was fairly enjoyable. Agree that the beginning was the strongest part though.
the main problem with the jefferies special is it was 90 minutes. it definitely needed some major tightening up but it's not really fair to compare it to 60 min specials.
the thing that annoyed me most was that it had such a meandering pace yet my fav bit from the live show was cut, so i'll just type it here:
Spoiler:
it was on the back of the long ****ting bit (which i think was probably the funniest section), and it involved him having hemorrhoids and getting piss and **** all over the bathroom floor with hank watching, and then saying 'and now hank, this is the part where your mummy cleans it up'. obviously doesn't sound that funny typed, but i was dying.
I liked FreeDumb a lot, actually, but I'm a huge Jeffries fanboy.
Anybody heard of Gary Gulman? At work so no link but his brief appearance on Conan was legit great. Going to look up more of his stuff when I get home.

I opened for Gary Gulman last year. He is absolutely incredible live. He has an amazing ability to veer off on a 5 minute tangent and loop back around to the orginal storlyline (you can kind of see it briefly here with the omelette station, but in an hour set he can wander much more.)
He is the best comic I've ever worked with. I can't recommend him highly enough.
His most recent special, It’s About Time, is on Netflix.

Sick brag, congrats! I'll check his Netflix special out tonight.

Wow, this was great. Hard to be that funny and squeaky clean.
Stanhope has a new special coming on 9/15!!! Some streaming thing called Seeso?? Whatever. Can't wait!!
Seeso actuallly has some decent stuff on it. It's NBC's online wannabe Comedy Central. If you get a trial sub for the Stanhope special be sure to check out Big Jay Oakerson's all crowd work series called "What's your ****in Deal?" As expected w/ a crowd work show it has it's ups and downs but the highs are pretty ****ing awesome.
John Oliver tomorrow night. Rory Scovel in September, Tig Notaro in October (and possibly Dylan Moran), Hannibal in November.
John Oliver was great, Brooks Whelan opened and I thought he was very good as well. Heard some of both of their material before (Brooks on Put Your Hands Together, Oliver I think from his stand up show on cc a few years back). Still a phenomenal show.
Seeing Louie at MSG in a couple weeks
Seeing Daniel Kitson in NYC in November
pretty stoked for both
Saw Louis CK in Amsterdam a week or so ago. While I like the show, I think the venues are way too big. I'm basically looking at the screen the whole night and I did not have bad seats.
Much prefer comedy club venues, and don't think I'll ever go see comedians in stadium-type venues again.
Never been to a big comedy show and just got tickets for Jim Gaffigan at Just For Laughs Toronto. Pumped! Pretty expensive though at roughly $300 for a pair of mediocre tickets. Thinking of getting Jim Jefferies for the week before too, as it's a bit cheaper, but getting into the city is a pain.

jealous. i actually had a really vivid dream about daniel kitson last night, presumably because before bed i was reading lots about his shows at the edinburgh fringe. i really miss being in england and being able to go to all his stuff.
this year hasn't been all that great a year to be a comedy fan in australia. i don't have a ton of shows coming up, but hannibal tickets for december went on sale last week and i got some. nice surprise, and my favourite venue too.
Yeah I thought about that too. I don't know if he's been out since then at all, I'd assume he's done some small clubs leading up to the NY comedy festival
all of these NYC performance in recent years are plays, not standup, though i assume you know that. sign up to his mailing list if you're not on it already so you don't miss anything going forward. it's always a pretty fun read.
