Moderna vaccine approved by FDA, Shuffle still think it's a pump and dump scam?

This is pretty huge that mRNA has been proven to work as a vaccine technology. Could radically change the game when it comes to responding to new viruses in the future.

How much can Moderna ship in the next few months?

Not quite yet. Review panel recommended approval. Actual approval probably tomorrow.

News reports say 6 million already in government inventory ready to ship. It’s a bit of an unknown because they have to outsource (they’ve never done any production like this before). Supposedly they can deliver 20 million by the end of the month and another 100 million in Q1 2021.

Also results from Johnson & Johnson phase 3 trial should be announced any day now.

Any predictions on when a regular, under-65 person will be able to get the vaccine? Trump admin has been saying by March/April. But today I heard members of the Biden team saying more like late summer/fall for those under 65. I am hoping they are just being cautious and it doesn't really end up taking that long.

Most thought the late 2020 timeline for an approved vaccine was too optimistic so maybe this is a case of the Biden admin under promising and over delivering.

There's some significant evidence that a large portion of the Japanese population, and perhaps that of other Asian countries, are essentially immune to the virus, perhaps due to exposure to other coronaviruses.

There was a study in September finding that 50% of a sample of Tokyo tested seropositive for covid, despite only about 0.1% of the population actually being confirmed positive for the active virus.

It mostly depends on when the J&J vaccine comes online. It’s one shot, no super-cold storage and they should be able to manufacture a ton. If it’s approved by Jan/early Feb, there will start to be enough doses for everyone by March/April. If it slips or doesn’t test well, then it’ll be on the Summer/Fall timeline. The early time frame requires most everything to go well, but it might. It has so far.

In a perverse way, our abject failure to control COVID is a good thing because it has allowed the phase 3 trials to go really fast. Not much comfort to the 320k dead people however.

Apparently, the data suggests that just getting the first shot of the Moderna vaccine is 92% effective. It would seem like if we just gave everyone one shot, we could vaccinate everyone who wants it by early March. I’m surprised there aren’t more people advocating for this, but here’s one.

Where is that significant evidence? You have one study, not peer-reviewed AFAIK, of ~ 2000 employees of six locations of one company in Tokyo. It's quite a leap to go from those seropositivity findings to Japanese people are immune to coronaviruses. There are a bunch of other possible intervening causes in between there.

Also, Japan is currently experiencing a peak in infection and death rates.

That doesn’t really support your “destroyed the economy” thesis. The first article shows Q1 & Q2 GDP declines of 1.8% and 12.2%. The US, with very few restrictions, dropped 5% and 32.9% in those same quarters. Furthermore, Thailand has a massive tourism sector, which is going to drop precipitously with or without quarantine.

The second article seems primarily to state that political unrest is a bigger factor in slowing the recovery than COVID policy.

Yeah, difference between 92% and 95% to get it out twice as fast would make sense.

I guess most here will need this answered for the USA#9, bit there's a calculator here for folks in the UK:

https://www.omnicalculator.com/health/vaccine-queue-uk

You might be able to play around with some of the numbers to get a rough idea. I guess your population has roughly the same age demographics as ours.

This sounds much slower than the US timeline.

I wonder if this is because the US will have access to so much more of the Moderna vaccine than the UK. I've read that the US has contracted for 200M Moderna doses, compared to just 7M for the UK.

If true, it makes the US decision to only get 100M Pfizer doses seem much more defensible.

Shops are still open, just at reduced capacity. This basically means nothing.

45% of the economy is dependent on tourism according to the article and they're not letting anyone into the country

guess it isn't destroyed you right.

The UK kind of banked on the Oxford vaccine, which is unfortunate given their crappy phase 3 data.

Pfizer claiming they have millions of doses in their warehouse with nowhere to send as they have been given no direction by the gov. I want to believe this is fake news.
