I'm listening to the whole radio interview now, and while he definitely sounds insane, he also sounds like he's having a blast. He doesn't sound like someone who's down and out and using because he cant help himself; he sounds like he really believes he is winning at life, and who am I to argue?

18 year olds don't have a pot to piss in. I think the older demos bring in the bigger ad bucks.

OK, I thought more and it was late 1997 so Angus was close to 4. He was at a commercial audition and a casting associate friend of mine called me and said "You've got to meet this kid, he's about to sign with a bad agency." I wasn't working with kids at the time (I only worked with kids VERY briefly at the beginning of my career and stopped for all the reasons you can think of), but I set up a meeting with the kids division. I met him when he came in and hung out with him every time he came into the office from then on.

When he visited the entire office stopped what they were doing and came to my office to talk to him. He was a very little kid but would talk for as long as you wanted about anything you wanted. He had an unbelievably cute voice and an opinion on everything. He wouldn't arrive or leave without hugging me. He was immediately comfortable in every room with any person, whether he'd met them before or not.

There are a handful of not-yet successful performers I've met that you could literally feel their presence in a room, and this was true of Angus when he was a tiny child. The second was Joel McHale. The third was Nate Torrence. The fourth hasn't hit yet, I should PM his name to somebody to prove that I predicted it when he breaks, he's totally unknown now.

Anyway, Angus did some commercials for a while and the theatrical division didn't pay much attention to him because he was so little, and there's not much for kids that age, and what there is usually goes to twins and triplets (I'll explain why if anybody cares). But then he went in on a big movie that had a big kid's role and he almost beat out the twins that eventually booked it. The producers liked him so much they flew him and his mother to NY to train/work with him for three days before the studio test to try to make the studio confident he could handle it. So it was obvious he had it, and the theatrical agent who had never glanced at him once before basically took over. He's still with her and the same agency today.

I stand corrected, I don't watch it and didn't check, this was told to me by someone in my office who I thought would've known.

The ridiculous Hollywood rumor making the rounds right now is that Emilio's going to replace him, but I just can't accept that.

Isn't that probably the grandiosity and narcissism as a result of cocaine induced psychosis?

I know this is de rigeur in your line of work, but the whole hugging/everybody stop working to come see this kid thing is kinda creepy.

Re: twins, this is due to strict union laws about many hours kids can work in a day, correct?

Joel McHale can't wear Kinnear's jock.

Sure, probably, but it seems to be his preferred lifestyle and he's not endangering others. I'm glad I don't have to work with him, but he has chosen to win in this manner.

RE: Creepy - I somewhat agree. I stopped personally repping kids because of it (and other reasons). A good kids agent will go to school plays, malls, etc, and approach kids that have something special. My agency currently has a kids department because it's a business necessity, but I'm not proud of it. That said, I've known kids who booked 2 commercials before being 7, make $100K, never auditioned again, got out without anything bad happening. That's pretty cool. I could go on and on about the kids business. Maybe I should do a second installment of my ask me thread.

RE: Twins - correct. Also with very little kids you increase your chances that at least one of them won't be in a terrible mood for no discernible reason, something I know you know kids are capable of. On a commercial they'll often hire 5 kids/sets of kids, have them all show up, and use the one(s) that are most on their game that day. Everybody else goes home or, worse, sits there and watches the "winner" do the job. Terrible business.

RE: Joel - He's a phenomenon. He's a better actor and a better host than Kinnear. He owes Kinnear for making the transition less zany, but beyond that he's > Kinnear in nearly every way.

Yep, it was from that and WA Lottery commercials that I signed him.

Seattle people are omnipresent in LA right now. Much of Joel's writing staff at E! are people that he was longtime friends with from Seattle.

He didn't seem as polished on Almost Live, but still funny. I remember when The Soup first started, I was glad they were giving him a chance. But I didn't think he really had enough star quality to succeed. Which is why I am not a talent agent.

Kinnear turned a **** eating grin and a questionably good head of hair into a serviceable career without expending any energy whatsoever.

Let's see what happens when McHale jumps into movies.

plz, like he's not endangering anyone who comes in contact with him. the stuff he spews out of his mouth (even if it's hilarious) is endangering the minds of everyone who has to listen to it on a regular basis. i imagine anyone who says "no" to him is at risk. he probably just doesn't have to deal with that too often cuz he's busy winning. but i mean, the dude has beaten women (who can question you when you love so violently, though?) and had gun rights revoked. but i guess that was because he's already winning so hard.

Wasn't it John Henson when it first started? He was awesome back then, but obviously hasn't really gone anywhere with it. (Hosting Wipeout seems like a pretty awful gig.)

McHale reminds me too much of one of the more annoying people I've known and thus I find it hard to like him when I've seen The Soup with him hosting. Haven't started watching Community yet, though.

Yeah I mean when you beat a porn star/hooker and chase her into a bathroom in a paranoid rage because you erroneously think she stole a trivial amount of money to you, that's not exactly WINNING.

Ginger Lynn in her Behind the whatever documentary talks about her and Charlie picking through the carpet on day 11 of a bender, looking for rocks. I've done that and been to day 3, and both were pretty hellish. Crack stops being fun and turns manic after a couple hours.

I thought Joel sucked after taking over for John Henson(who i loved), but now i love him even more. He does have that certain something.

And poor John Henson, just saw him hosting Wipeout, wtf? I thought his star was really rising. I guess Talk Soup was just the perfect vehicle for him.

gorie - you are coming across as more of a downer ITT than Kelly Preston or Denise Richards, even.

It was Talk Soup then. I think the change to The Soup coinicided with McHale.

I met John Henson at Crazy Girls like a week after I moved to LA. Super nice, really cool guy. He told stories about getting baked with Tom and the other camera guys after the shoot, when they had to go film something else in an hour and he could just take a nap. Funny thing is Tom is still on The Soup. They feature the writers more than the camera guys now, but Tom still gets in a joke every now and then.
