Nah. She was a late bloomer. Once I explained it to her, she felt bad that she hadn't even realized. Poor dude. She just told him "that was a great set of songs, if you make anymore, I'd love copies," and the poor bastard must have poured his best efforts into half a dozen mixtapes and never even got a kiss out of it.

Yeah, yeah, sure, sure.

In college? There is zero chance some other girl didn't tell her what was up. This leads me to believe that she doesn't want to talk to you about her days when a mixtape was the price of admission.

I mean what woman would tell her current SO "He made me cum 3 times to this song"

All we know is they are special enough that she keeps them to this day

Garick, you should know better than to set OOT up like that.

You guys sound like my paranoid ex.

She'd hear me listening to music, Shazam it and Google the lyrics on her phone and try to figure out which former relationship I was thinking about and hence wanted to listen to music.

Putting up with her as long as I did is something I'm deeply ashamed about.

That's a relevant question.

I sure hope we aren't talking about Whitney Houston -> Boys II Men -> Maria Carey.

half my life ago i dated a woman in college who won a radio competition to program an entire half hour of music for 96.9 The Eagle out of Sacramento. helped her pick out a few songs, she recorded the entire broadcast (mostly Tom Petty songs) and to my knowledge never took the tape out of the cassette deck of her 1988 Honda Accord.

I still enjoy crafting mixtapes, although it's more like spotify playlists these days. I'm all about syncing up those perfect transitions.

It's a pointless skill-set that I relish flexing. Truly, a dying art.

Mixtapes rule. Your very own greatest hits. One after the other.

Checking in to the FM radio on New Years Eve on a good receiver with a top-notch taping deck and you are made in the shade for a mixtape. Doing it on New Years Eve made you a true mixtape pro.

I just noticed, are you in Vietnam now?

Considering the things she has told me, I hesitate to think how freaky it might have been in that case.

IDK if she still has them, tbh. They used to live in the storage between the bucket seats in her little truck that she owned when we met, along with a few storebought tapes and thus got played on road trips when we went out of range of decent radio. We haven't had a any sound system that plays cassettes for many, many years, but I recall them being pretty solid 80s college radio faves. Frankly, the guy put a lot of work into them and deserved a little sumpin' sumpin'.

Pretty sure being a DJ is a thriving art actually!

I meant it more specifically on a personal, non-commercial level— making tapes for friends and love interests. Hence the “pointless skill” quip.

That said, being a DJ artist (EDM or hip hop) is just as risky as any other musical career. Radio disk jockeys are most definitely a dying breed, the market has been shrinking for a long time now.

No, I was living there about 5 years ago. Back in the USA
