Before you do ANYTHING. Unlock the bootloader.

The unlock process will wipe the phone.

I rooted my SGS2 so as to remove bloat and increase battery life, but I didn't feel compelled to on the N5. It wasn't bloated, it has enough battery life, and it does everything I want out of the box. I'm not sure there's a huge advantage to rooting unless the Cyanogen mod guys are way ahead of the stock Nexus experience now.

Hmm didn't do this but as soon as I logged into Google it insta downloaded all the apps I had on my old phone. Will that happen again after I wipe it?

Main thing I wanna do is be able to use it as a hotspot. Not totally sure if rooting is necessary for that? On my s4 I used foxfi with mixed results

Using what network? Under 4.3 and T-mobile, I use the native tethering app.

Under 4.4 and T-mobile, it requires a tweak to some settings that you can easily google. I'm pretty sure the tweak requires root.

For AT&T and others, I'm not sure.

AT&T

afaik they charge u a monthly fee if u want native tethering? and possibly force you off of unlimited data?

i guess my other question would be is there any downside to rooting? not worried about voiding warranty or whatever.

What are your impressions about Galaxis S5 because I find it really beautiful but I want to know if it's a good thing to buy it

With the one button root options for the n5, there is no downside.

It's just as easy to unroot.

I don't know anything about tethering on at&t. I'm sure others here do.

Amazon is giving away 1000 free coins today for downloading some apps. Whats the best way to spend the $10? Was thinking grabbing one of the GTAs but I'm open for other suggestions.

Tasker: I have a profile as State > Headset Plugged (any) but it only triggers the entry task sporadically. The exit task seems to work consistently. Any ideas?

Just swap out the SIM card when Verizon pushes the OTA update.

Verizon will give you copies of your SIM card for free. They should have both of those formats.

There's a huge ad for it when you open the app store.

Rooting shouldn't affect anything, unless you have some root apps that are going haywire. What phone are you using? Did you flash a non-stock ROM? I'd check your APN in "Mobile Network" settings.
