Aren't most of the very rich from ties made in college?

All these companies got guys in the uber-rich tier via college.

I think that proves connections are important not college.

In trading my opinion is that getting the knowledge is the hard part and the actual trading is a easy in a relative sense. Set about this like it were a massive research project, find as many traders as you can who will talk to you and maybe eventually pay someone to teach you.

I would recommend selling drugs.

I think there are two main issues with "becoming rich". First you need to get yourself into a position where you have a lot of time to spend on activities that will get you there but likely wont make you any money in the mean time. This can be thousands and thousands of hours so you need some way to support yourself in the mean time, this means you need money or free cost of living or something which usually means money (or parents with money), cushy job etc. College replicates that kind of free time as well.

Stay where you are. If you don't have a nice exploitable skill to open a business then go back to school after you stop smoking weed based on employable opportunities you see around you.

You are not going to do **** in BC you can't do in southern Ontario..Marginal utility will kick in and you will be treading water in a bigger shark tank if not drowning...

If you haven't figured this out on your own though its probably best to lower expectations as far as money == happy...

I was going to say you sounded too lazy and ineffectual to get rich. At least that's the common result from smoking dope and not working hard for too long. But you do say you're ready to work hard. So I'm probably wrong. Which is great.

Tom Hopkins the famous sales trainer, says that sales is the highest paid hard work, but the lowest paid easy work. And there seem to be a lot of people who got wealthy in sales. A ton of the people on "wealthiest" lists did sales for a long time. Because bringing home the bacon in business is valuable.

So why not sales? There's a thread going on right now where you may get ideas for product areas to get into.

(I actually know a guy who sold 50% more than the previous guy in his territory, his first year. And doubled it in his second year and became one of the top couple salesman at the firm year after year. Good money. Because it was a substantial product to an industry where the people he called on liked to burn one now and then or more often. And when he joined in, they gave him a ton of business. But I wouldn't recommend that as a standard strategy. He also was the type who could organize. And he worked. Always checking in manufacturing to see what was up with the clients orders so he could keep them fully informed well ahead of time, keeping his paperwork in good order, substantial time on the road seeing his accounts, etc.)

Seriously? go back to school or go into private real estate (if your a good negotiator and have other personable traits about you, also only if you want to take a big risk).

I completely agree. I'm sure its just coincidence those people at Standford/Harvard/etc have great connections and my small liberal arts school didn't. I guess I just ran cold.

I may be mistaken, and someone correct me if I'm wrong..but nowadays, isn't university kind of an outdated way of networking? Like its definitely useful if its something like Harvard, but I'm almost positive you can get just as good of connections with the internet.

I grew up with a bunch of friends. 2 of them became "rich". One is an IP lawyer. You're not going that route.

One was a hairdresser. We kinda laughed about it, you know, the gay jokes, all that crap we gave him. Not so funny anymore. He was making 1k a week doing color and hair and stuff, then opened up his own shop, then moved to center city and bought out someone and now he has one of the nicer salons in the city. He's a multi-millionaire. No college, just extremely good at what he does - make people feel comfortable and happy about themselves, along with all the money that comes with it.

You have to find something you are extremely good at, or CAN become good at it, then run with it. Along those lines, you have to live way below your means because you don't have a cushion to fall back on. Of all the things I wish I did, I wish I didn't waste so much money going out and gambling. It's been easily over 100k, I would say more like 250k I've spent between 18-27 or so. I'd blow 3-500 a week gambling and going out, easily.

Find something you want to do, then figure out how to do it. You're young and you can work like an animal for a few years if need be. If you want to save 100k and open a business, you can actually do it if you're willing to work 2 jobs and live kinda poorly. It sounds nuts, but it's really not impossible at all, you just have to be willing to do without the things other people do. Most people can't do that.
