This.

Seems like the obvious choice considering the website.

1) Make a million+ at poker
2) Learn about investing
3) Apply same skills/work ethic used in poker towards investing
4) Profit
5) If fail at #3, just repeat #1?

I think the keys to success are....

1.social skills/networking.
2.work ethic/determination.
3.education.

If you were a woman, looking smoking hot is #1.

OP, henry is a troll, always with the same rhetoric.

Many of the posters ITT have laid it out for you, however Alberta oil sands are NOT over rated, and the idiots who say cost of living blah blah blah have no clue what they are talking about.

Many of the companies provide living space and meals. Plus you get an allowance for cost of living which is a ridiculous amount. My friend is out there right now and he is making something like $300/day cleaning.....

Check it out. The life sucks, and the key is to not blow all your money on your days off. but if you are willing to live in a remote area, and do ****ty work for amazing pay, that is your ticket with no education. no marketable skills and being canadian.

whats the path to becoming rich then?

Why does everyone want to get rich? Most people who die rich spend 30 years of their lives devoting 70 hours a week to a business they're building. By the time old age takes them they have a ton of money- but was it a good life?

I used to want to be rich. I made a lot of money. I learned my lesson spending M-Sat 8a-10p on a car lot. I'll take comfortable any day of the week now.

EDIT: The only people who will 'benefit' from your getting rich are your kids- and that's pretty dubious as the money could very easily **** them up.

I sorta agree with this. Goal in life should be to make 50kish doing something enjoyable. Maybe a little more if you have family to take of. Obv it's great if you aim higher as long as you're not killing yourself in order to do it. Money does not equal happiness.

I haven't found that to be true. I know quite a few people who would generally be considered rich and they range from working a little more than average to a little less than average. Further, given the choice between working 70 hours a week or working 40 hours and week but lacking the resources to have a fun life I rather work 70 hours a week. What value is there in having free time if you have no money to do fun stuff with?

You would work 12 hour days 6 days a week just to have fun on sunday? I find this hard to believe

Typically people who put in 70-90 hour weeks have a little more flexibility in their time management so I'd have my free time on a different night than Sunday and i could likely put in some 16 hour or even longer days and then have other free time. It is a lot better than the alternative of basically working and coming home and just not being able to afford to do anything.

There's a huge gap between those extremes.

You are in minority.

Most people would rather work less as long as they have a reasonable amount of money to live/enjoy.

but don't you think when they're 60 and still working they'll wish they would've put in those 70 hour weeks and be retired comfortably?

I do agree that a lot of people have convinced themselves that they can be happy with a lot less than they actually need but they are not really happy.

OP, just learn to beat poker, then learn to invest. poker will offer the most value in terms of barriers of entry/difficulty and building up an amount of money to work with to then transition into something else.

Yeah the first black editor of the harvard law review, with a best selling book who managed to beat the Clinton machine in democratic primaries can only read a teleprompter. Jesus I don't like a lot of his actions- but he's obviously not a moron.

Also don't derail (even bad) threads you ****ing troll.

I should point out that I consider comfortable to be a net household income of ~90k with one kid and two adults. This obviously leaves people enough money to do pretty much anything they want. I consider rich to be in the networth >5 Million category. You can tell yourself that it's impossible to live a comfortable life on that kind of money- but you're wrong.

90k in a major city with 2 adults, 1 kid, 2 cars, student loans and saving for the kid's education is far from "comfortable". You can do it, but it sure isn't fun unless you really enjoy staying home renting movies and eating at olive garden.

There is no way you could live on $90k in Toronto and call it comfortable. I think the same would likely be true of major cities like NYC, Boston, LA, SF, and Chicago. You certainly couldn't do "pretty much anything you want" on $90k anywhere unless you don't want very much.

I live in Louisville KY not Toronto. What can't you do with 90k assuming you don't want to blow 4k a month on entertainment?

Obviously that number can be revised to 150-200k for the cities you named- the cost of living is a great deal higher. Crap in Toronto I'd imagine housing would eat a minimum of 30k annually...

Well, seeing that 50% of the US lives in cities, the 90k figure is a bit misleading I think.

So, if you are looking at it from a KY type of view, yeah sure 90k is ok, kinda. I still wouldn't call it "comfy" though. But to each his own.
