Poker sites LOVE rewards because it gives them all the control. They can make the rake high and give themselves guaranteed revenue. They can tweak their rewards system however they like giving out more money or less money.
If rake was reasonable, players wouldn't need or care about rewards. We only get into this VIP/rakeback game because rake is high. The debate revolves mainly around what is considered reasonable rake and how soft are the games? Players can tolerate a higher rake if the game is juicy. There is a sub debate about what Merge is going to do with all the VIP points they basically stole and the extra money they will have from stopping the VIP program. If they use that money to advertise or give incentive to fish and the games are softer, then maybe it's an even trade. If it's a money grab, I've moved half my action to Bovada anyway, so players like me are taking notice and voting with our dollars. Unfortunately, based on Merge's decisions, it seems to be what they WANT anyway.
The crux of the problem I have with these actions is that they put far too little value on winning players and more games running. They seem to be acting as if those players are cutting into their revenue when in fact we actually keep the ecosystem alive and functioning. There definitely should be a limit on how much a shark can multiply and swim in the water, but 2 and 4 table caps is too extreme and removing the VIP system across the board and not adjusting the rake is unsatisfactory unless the games get noticeably softer.
^^^ this. Merge easily has the toughest mtts across the board. The only thing that Merge has going for it is their software, which imo is considerably better than Bovada, and infinitely better than WPN software. ( WPN software makes me wanna cry if I am playing more than 2-4 tables. )
Bovada has far and away the softest mtts, and they also have ridiculously quick cashouts when compared to Merge and BCP. BCP has P2P, which is very nice, and is why I play there some coupled with their deeper/easier mtts over Merge. Carbon wins with great software, and overall game selection. You would think that one of these sites would integrate P2P + fast cashouts + great software together. I would imagine that they could dominate the USA market and make a killing in the process.
