I'm playing in the Contender Heads up MTT and it looks like about 60 people were given 1st round byes. WTF is that about?

Hey guys, I have a couple of questions about how Bovada handles different currencies. I couldn't find anything about this on their website nor on Google.

I'm in Canada and it looks like I would deposit in CAD and my account balance would be in CAD. But how does it work when I actually play? When I join a table, is my CAD converted to USD, and vice versa when I leave? And if so, does Bovada use the mid-market exchange rate or does it charge a spread for each transaction?

Thanks.

That will always happen unless the tournament is maxed out. Someone, somewhere has to have a bye to even it out.

Anyone have any word on the status of the mobile client? It would really be nice to get some bug fixes and MTTs added.

That's how it has to work in any shootout. If you don't give people 1st round byes, then you're going to be forced to give byes in later rounds, which would be much worse.

I'm ignorant to how this works (I would've played this event had I known it was heads up...here's to reading event descriptions )--but shouldn't it be the case that a maximum of 1 person gets a bye in round 1? Assuming no late reg, wouldn't it be possible to fully match up the player base, with the possible exception of one person?

edit: i'm an idiot/slightly drunk--they would need to give 1st round byes equivalent to n such that {x-n}=2^y, where x is total entries, n is # of byes, and y is a (positive) integer, to be able to create the desired structure, no?

Right. In order to have the final round be 2 players it has to be either 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512 etc. at some point, and giving byes in the first round is the most fair way to make that happen.

Closer now, but not quite. I'm tired and seem to be having trouble with a formula, but the idea is that once the first round is over, you'll have 2^y players left. Your formula won't create that.

Here are some examples that work:

18 players 14 byes
24 players 8 byes
30 players 2 byes

I think (x-n)/2+n=2^y works.

Or just get boot camp and never have to worry about this again.

But yeah, having a second internet connection and computer is crucial if you are playing high stakes. I have my phone set up to be able to tether a 4g connection instantly in case of power loss or internet outage. I don't even play high stakes but don't want to risk it.

This explains it. The tournament started with 448 players and they needed it to get to 256 as quick as possible. 384 Heads up + 64 byes gets us 192+64= 256 by round 2.

Yes, indeed it does. I'd even phrase it as x+n=2^y, where y is a positive integer, for the sake of being mathematically terse, but this phrasing robs of us the intuitive structure of your version

That's the right idea, but half of those x-n players are moving on, as well, so you really want n+0.5(x-n)=2^y. Or to put it more succinctly, the number of byes required is n=(2^y)-x, where (2^y) is the next biggest power of 2.

Try Bodog888. This is the asian market skin.

Not positive China is included but that would be the best place to start.

Games/player pools should be the same on Bodog888 as Bodog and Bovada skins.

If you are a player using Bodog/Bovada from say, North America and are looking to play while in China, I am not sure how that works. In this case, call the skin you are currently using and ask how you can play while traveling to China.

Yes, your CAD is converted to USD and then back once you leave the table. I think the rate is adjusted daily. It doesn't go up or down during the day based on the markets.

I currently live in NV and can play on bovada in the same player pool as everyone else. Cashouts have been fine, but from what I understand, they won't take new accounts or deposits from NV residents.

Not sure about the address change to NV, I'd email bovada and ask them

So in other words when you join and leave the table, the conversion is done at the same rate for both? That's good. Thanks.

Posting this continually isn't going to change anything. Obviously the more players Bovada can accept on their site, the more money they're going to make - they're not excluding NY players to spite you, they're doing so because they feel they need to for legal reasons.

But if for some reason you really think that nagging them will change things, start sending them emails instead.

I am new to Bovada and ran up my account. I requested a wire but it was denied. I was told to call customer service for an explanation. I cannot receive wires because I am "easily identifiable" as a poker player by the bank - ie: google search my name. I asked the customer rep what happens if I win $50-$100k in their new donkament series and he says withdraw it through $3k check and $2500 chargebacks, as there is no way they can up my limit. That seems a bit ridiculous. This is probably why the site is so soft because professionals can't get their money out in a timely manner.
